Department Head
The Department of Art provides an opportunity
for a student with a major interest in art
to develop his talents in the environment of a
Christian liberal arts institution. It is important,
therefore, that every student set his goals to include
scholarship and deep learning in the core
curriculum of the college as well as understanding
and skill in his major field of art.
The Bachelor of Science in Education is a
professional degree, and students who successfully
complete that program are qualified to teach
art at the secondary school level. The Bachelor
of Arts is not intended as a professional degree
but rather as a necessary foundation for further
study at the graduate level for prospective artists,
college art teachers, and art historians, or
for concentrated training in advertising art,
interior decoration, and other commercial arts.
The development of basic studio skills is emphasized.
Such experience is balanced, however,
with introductory courses in art history
and theory in order to establish historical perspective
and develop critical judgment.

There is greater activity in the various art
professions now than at any time in America's
history. Expanding public school systems require
a growing supply of art teachers. At the college
level, artist-teachers of exceptional ability are
in great demand and well prepared lecturers
and research specialists in art history and art
education find numerous opportunities in the
