20 Academic Information
General Education Requirements
The table on the next page summarizes the General Education
requirements for all bachelor's degrees at ACU.
Second Bachelor's Degree
To receive a second bachelor's degree, a student must
complete at least 24 hours beyond the first degree and
must meet all general education and major field requirements
for the second degree.
PLANNING A DEGREE
Student Responsibility
This catalog is designed to make planning and scheduling
a degree program as simple as possible. Each student at
Abilene Christian University should keep in mind,
however, that he alone is ultimately responsible for understanding
and fulfilling all degree requirements.
Help in degree planning is available from several sources
(such as offices of the college dean, department chairman,
and faculty), but the student must make sure that recommendations,
course plans, and total hours are correct in
relation to the catalog. Problems should be referred to
the Academic Affairs Office.
Note that each degree-seeking student must fulfill certain
requirement areas:
1. General Education Requirements
2. Departmental Core or Special Requirements (if
specified in the catalog)
3. Major Requirements
4. Minimum major and upper division hour requirements
(see "General Education Requirements for All
Bachelor's Degrees" above).
The information provided in this catalog is subject to
change without notice and does not constitute a contract
between Abilene Christian University and a student or anapplicant for admission. The information in this catalog is
current as of January, 1988.
Graduation under a Particular Catalog
The student is permitted to meet the graduation requirements
in the catalog for the year when he first enrolled in
the university, or the catalog for any subsequent year,
provided that not more than six years have elapsed between
his first enrollment in the university and graduation.
However, the student must satisfy all graduation requirements
set forth in the catalog under which he graduates.
Important Suggestions for Planning Class Schedules
The suggestions which follow are made with your best interest
in mind. Past experience suggests that failure to
comply with these guidelines often results in academic as
well as scheduling problems for the student.
1. Become familiar with the catalog, especially those sections
that relate to your major, before you seek counsel
from your advisor.
2. Do seek counsel from your department chairman or advisor.3. Follow the requirements for your major as outlined in
the department section of the catalog.
4. All general education requirements should be completed
by the end of your sophomore year.
5. Some courses are offered less than once a year.
Failure to schedule these courses at the proper time
may delay your graduation.
6. Before you enroll in a class, be sure that you have satisfied
all prerequisites for the course. If you have not,
you will be required to withdraw from the course.
The experience will prove to be both frustrating and
time consuming.
7. If you are a freshman, you must enroll in classes in
Bible, English, and PE.
8. Education majors should apply for admission to the
Teacher Education Program during the second
semester of their sophomore year, or near the end of
their first semester on campus if they are transfer students.
Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.5
for admission in this program.
9. Business, Social Work, Nursing, and Home Economics
Education majors must also apply for admission to
upper division programs. (See department sections
of this catalog.)
For more information on degree requirements, see the
departmental sections of this catalog. For counseling, contact
the chairman or the advisor of your major department
in their offices on campus or at the following address:
