From the President
Welcome to Abilene Christian
University!
In this our 93rd school year,
our mission remains unchanged:
to educate students for Christian
service and leadership throughout
the world. We're glad you're
interested in ACU, a place where
you will grow academically,
spiritually, and socially. ACU
seeks to educate the whole
student through its unique
integration of exceptional academics, spiritual development,
and campus life. Our mission guides our daily decisions,
and Christ is central to everything we do. His power to
transform lives exhibits itself daily on our campus.
This catalog carefully explains ACU's respected academic
program, which is designed to help prepare you for the
21st century. ACU graduates have achieved success in a
variety of professions, and our more than 84,000 alumni
form a network of friends and contacts who can help youlaunch your career. Companies such as The Prudential,
Pennzoil, EDS, Price Waterhouse and Dow Chemical,
churches around the world, school districts, graduate
schools and other organizations regularly employ the
outstanding young men and women educated at ACU.
National experts have consistently recognized ACU for
its academic and spiritual quality and its value. For four
straight years, U.S. News and World Report has recognized
ACU as one of "America's Best Colleges." The John Culler
& Sons college guidebook places ACU in "America's
100 Best College Buys" again in 1999. And ACU has been
named to the John Templeton Foundation Honor Roll for
Character-Building Colleges every year since the program's
inception.
A record number of students enrolled at ACU last year.
For a complete education, one with value both now and for
eternity, we invite you to become a part of the Abilene
Christian University heritage.

Welcome to undergraduate
studies at Abilene Christian
University!
ACU is recognized as one of
the finest comprehensive
universities in the nation,
preparing outstanding men and
women to enter graduate school,
to begin or to enhance their
careers, and to make a difference
in the world.
At the heart of the educational
experience is the interaction of faculty and students. As a
teaching institution, ACU emphasizes a dynamic personal
relationship between the two. Qualified faculty members
teach underclassmen, and professors work with undergraduates
when doing research.
In their undergraduate years, students will participate in
field experiences, service projects and other hands-on
learning opportunities that solidify their classroomeducation. Many students have the opportunity before
graduation to complete an internship, the valuable on-thejob
experience many employers say they are seeking. On
campus, the student body is enriched by people from all
50 states and over 60 countries. This interaction plus study
abroad opportunities on several continents cultivate a
global perspective and appreciation of world mission.
Each year some of the nation's top companies come to
campus to interview because they regard ACU graduates
for their blend of creativity, technical skills, thorough
training, strong foundation in the arts and sciences, and
moral integrity. ACU students have an acceptance rate of
more than 80 percent to medical and other professional
schools, well above the national average.
At ACU, we strive to make Christ the center of
everything we do, and we believe spiritual commitment
demands the highest standards of academic excellence.Dr. Dwayne D. VanRheenen
