Master of Divinity
AN 84-HOUR NON-THESIS PROGRAM
Adviser: Dir Charles Siburt
The purpose of the Master of Divinity degree is to equip students
in a comprehcnsixvc education including biblical, theological, and
historical studies, and training in practical ministry. It is considered
the foundational degree for the preaching ministry and it provides
thorough preparation for effective work in a varietT of ministry tasks
and contexts. It provides opportunities for students to integrate
academic preparation with practical experience in ministry. It is
also designed to equip students with advanced academic skills in
preparation for doctoral work (both Ph.D. and D.Min.).
Prerequisites
A student must complete at least one year of Greek or Hebrewx
If both Greek and Hebrew are taken at the undergraduate level,
the program will still be 84 hours, but 6 additional hours of general
electives will be taken.
Degree Requirements
* Tools (12-18 hours)
6-12 hours biblical language
BHEB 671 and BHEB 672 Introduction to Hebrew
BGRK 611 and BGRK 612 Elementary New Testament Greek
(if not taken at the undergraduate level)
BIBD 672 Introduction to Graduate Studies
BIBL 627 Biblical Exegesis or BGRK 622 Exegesis of the Greek
New Testament. Students entering with no undergraduate
exegesis course and/or no Greek must take the entry level
course. Students who have had an undergraduate exegesis
course and the appropriate language may take BGRK 622 if
they choose. Students who plan to take BGRK exegetical
seminars must take BGRK 622 for their exegesis requirement.
All text classes require exegesis as a prerequisite.
* History and theology (12 hours)
BIBH 651 History of Christianity I
BIBH 652 History of Christianity II
If a course in Restoration History has not been taken at the
undeigraduate level, it must be taken in this program,
reducing thegeneral electives to 6 hours.

BIBL 611 Old Testament Theology or
BIBL 621 New Testament Theology
BIBL 610 Advanced Introduction to the Old Testament

6 hours of Old Testament text
6 hours of elective text, Old Testament or New Testament Text
credit can be earned for classes in biblical theology and Hebrew

3 hours ministry elective: this course is to be taken in a specialized
area that is appropriate to the ministry goals of the student

BIBM 629 Field Education: this course is taken during the last
12 months of the program
* General electives (6-15 hours)
The number of hours required depends on whether a student
has taken Restoration History and/or both languages at the
undergraduate level. Electives may be taken from graduate Bible
or any other university department upon approval of the adviser.
* Mission emphasis
Students planning to do mission work may pursue a missions
emphasis M.Div. For the specific course work, see the
Department of Missions description in the Graduate Catalog.
* Oral examination
During the last semester of course work, each student must take
6 hours of oral exams relating their academic work to ministry
Orals are generally scheduled in April and November of each year.
* Assessment of readiness for ministry
Instruments will be administered at the beginning of the program
(in BIBD 672 Introduction to Graduate Studies) and during the
last year of the program (in BIBM 629 Field Work). A $40
course fee will be required for each of these two courses.
* English Bible requirement
All students are required to take an exam over the English Bible
prior to entering the second calendar year of the M.Div. program.
This exam will involve knowing a basic outline of each book of the
Bible as well as basic themes, key interpretive issues, and selected
texts of each book. Students who do not pass this exam must
complete it successfully during the semester after the exam is first
administered. Students who do not pass this second exam will not
be able to enroll in classes until the exam is successfully completed.* Ministry (24 hours)
