The Master of the Chicago Wheat. Pit 1h
( lose Student an,I a (iooil Talker.
[Siu'cial Correspondence ]
CHICAGO, May 1.—When the market
is active and the wheat pit oil the floor
of the board of trade contains a buzz-
ing. shouting, screaming swarm of
brokers, the eyes of those most deeply
interested are not so much 011 the dial
where the fluctuations in price are being
constantly registered as on a grim and
terror inspiring figure stalking 'about
near the grand staircase. This is "Old
Hutch." as he has been christened by
those vlio have fallen in the fray. So
large a percentage of the population
bear the scars of wounds received ia the
wheat pit that the fame of li. P. Hutch-
inson as a financier is obscured by the
notoriety of "Old Hutch."
Probably no prominent character in
the west i.i more generally misunderstood
than he. Even his enemies have to ac-
knowledge t hat his most disastrous forays
on the market have invari.-Vbly been pre-
coded by repeated warnings to the crowd
to "stand from under," which, had they
been accepted, would have meant safety.
Unprejudiced observers can see plainly
enough that what some of his rivals ac-
complish by means of trickery, luck and
reckless "bluffing," this much traduced
veteran owes to his extraordinary physi-
cal vitality, his phenomenal energy and a
vigilance, that never relaxes for a moment.
A very few of Mr. Hutchinson's busi-
ness associates know him as something
more than the terror of the wheat ,mar-
ket, and they thoroughly enjoy his so-
ciety. When 'change opens, they stan 1
aloof, for the "old man" is carrying in
his mind the operations of a dozen brok-
ers, who are reporting constantly how
the battle wages in the pit. ' When the
bell taps at the close the veteran stalks a
little way up the street to his bank, the
Com Exchange. Here the loose ends of
the (lay's business are pick 1 up and
some 1 . -nnic general orders i n i f'or

from the lips of "Old Hutch." But i;
any one expects to hear a word about
how to; t. money out of wheat, or out
of' anything else for that matter, di-ap-
pointment awaits him.
It., is Tboreau. hi-, favorite philosopher
Margaret Fuller, the dispersion < i the
races, t he theory of evolution, t he poetry
of Browning, Tennyson, Dante, ,8!ia': •
speare, evolution, religion, art. rnusie,
medi. ini—the whole range of subject^
which appeal to the i:o -!ii 1 -n-v of en-
light ned humanity supply texts for the
discourse of this wonderful man. His
grammar i.s often faulty, and hi; pronun-
t iation occasionally souiethin .r to smile
at. lie sees the smile and affably ex-
plains how he never went to school a
day in his life. But he lias a rugged
eloquence that never fails to impress
those who listen. • They know that this
man, who is master of trade and finance,
has read more books than the professors,
and read them better: that he knows
pictures and poetry better tlian the pain-
ters aud the 'poets; that he has looked
deep) into the lives of the men and
women of history and found in them
more than their biographers dreamed of.
Often the old man holds forth on these
matters, over an occasional glass of beer
and cheese sandwich, until within an
hour of dawn. Then his littl audience
crawls off to bed. But' bed is not in the
thoughts of "Old Hutch." He gives his
big form it shake, and, going t A the office
of his favorite newspaper, buys the lim
sheet wet from the press, boards a hoitse
car and is at the stock yards by sunrise.
Usually a day thru begun makes history

J. P, Ctc esacin who resides on San

and experience to a Journal reporter. It
is evident that his earnest and emphatic
deelarati cs of relief from a . period of
twenty years differing,carried conviction
iuto the minds of a number of listeners.
"I have suffered for twenty years," he
said, "from catarrh and bronchitis, and
many times I thought I would just have
to die,as it seemed 110 relief eould be had.
A great portion of the time I was unable
to work and was compelled to sleep in a
sitting position, as I would smother when
ly int? down. At one time I went to see
I)r Hunter, a celebrated physician in
New Or!ems.- I>r. J A. Hunter, I be-I

a little, he failed to cure me. My friends
finally induced me to come to Texas,
thinking perbaos, the climate here would
do me good. You see, I lived in Arkan-
sas, and b«ve been here about two years,
but I could not see that the climate did
me any good. Hearimr of Drs Brown &
Lansing, 1 went to see them and

never have heard of ihem if tfcey had not
advertised, as their office was at the
Grand Windsor hotel, and what business
had I around the Grand VVindaor hotel?
I had spent over 11,000 besides lq?a of
time previous to seeing Drs Brown &
Lansing's advertisement."

his restoration to health and vigorous
manhood as a sort of new birth, and, in

A constitution reporter learning that E.

months past, had been greatly r ii.-vediu
a very short time by t!;e renowned spe-

call was made at his late place of busi-

of an opportunity to state his ctse as he
wanted tdl of his friends and others who
suffer to know what great relief had been
tnven him, that they too might be bene- *
fitted before Drs. Brown and Lansing
left. Ilis sta ement was that he had
been suffering with general dtbility,
heart trouble, and with trreat gaMralgia
of the stomach since the 20th of lust Am

I left ly prostrated aud would be confined
to his bed for several days; his appetite
failed him and he cru'd not reiish the
most timpting food; his str ntrth was fast
for-ahing him, and last mon'.h if he were
to walk a block or two be would be
completely exhausted He consulted sev*
eral physicians but w«s given no relief,
and on the Oth of this month, placed him*
self under the treatment of these emi*
nent specialists, and now after receiving
their treatment for two weeks, be says
that he feels like a new man and that ter-
rible feehig of lassitude and weakuess
has been supplanted with vigor and
strength. He goes buhting now, and can
re main on the field the entire day, an4
feels no ill effects from it at night, and
while a few weeks ago to walk one-half
a mile would completely prostrate him.
1 He has been so ereatly benefited by Drs.
. Brown & Lansing's treatment that last
week he walked a distance of five miles
without any exertion. He feels no hes-
itancy in recommending these gentlemen
to all the>se who are suffering, and feels
satisfied if they follow directions, if there
is any chance for them to be relieves,
