Browning will be studied, with special emphasis on "The Ring and
the Book," "The Dramatic Monologue" and Narrative Poems.
Three semester hours.
ENGLISH 212. Nineteenth Century Poetry. A study will be
made of Wordsworth, Coleridge, Scott, Byron, Shelley, Keats, Tennyson,
Browning, with relation to the social, religious, political,
and economic life of all times. Three semester hours.
ENGLISH 213. Eighteenth Century Literature. A careful study
will be made of Defoe, Swift, Addison, Steele, Fielding, Samuel
Johnson, Smollett, Goldsmith, Burk and Boswell. Three semester
hours.
ENGLISH 214. Drama. A study will be made of the English
Drama from the beginning to the contemporary period. Three
semester hours.
ENGLISH 215. Novel. A consideration will be made of the
Novel through the nineteenth century. Three semester hours.
ENGLISH 219. Contemporary Poetry. A study will be made
of the poetry of Masefield, Fletcher, Brooke, Hardy and others in
British poetry. A study will be made of the works of many American
Modern Poets including Frost, Sandburg, Edwin Arlington
Robinson, Amy Lowell, Sara Teasdale and Edna St. Vincent Millay.
Three semester hours.
ENGLISH 220. Milton. A study will be made of Milton's prose
and poetry with special stress on "Paradise Lost." Three semester
hours.
ENGLISH 221. The Teaching of English in the High School. A
study will be made of some effective methods employed in successful
schools; methods suggested by prominent educators. There will
be a review of material required; classroom practice and demonstration.
Three semester hours.
