Goitre
l
HAT causes a goitre? What are the first symptoms? Ia there a
cure? Goftre or goiter or "big neck" Is an enlargement of the
thyroid gland, which Is situated In the neck, Just below the Adam's
apple. In young women slight enlargement of this gland Is very
common; it may persist for a year or two and then subside; In rare cases
this enlargement may persist.
Apart from these considerations of ago and sex goitre la rare In the
United States and Canada. In Great Britain It Is called the berbyshlre neck,
because it prevails in that shire. In Switzerland and In parts of Italy and
Franco It is very prevalent
The thyroid enlargement Is uniform over the front of the neck; or
only on one sld« Wken It ia small It causes no inconvenience; only "the
looks of it" are disturbing. Wben large it may compress the windpipe and
. cause difficulty of breathing. Or It may pass down behind the breastplate
and compress large and Important veins. In some cases there is pressure
on tho pneumogastric nerve; In consequence there will be symptoms asso-
ciated with the organs which that great nerve supplies—the lungs, the
heart and the stomach. But these are exceptional circumstances; in most
cases there are no serious symptoms.
In regions where goitre prevails the drinking water ought fo be sterll-
lied or boiled. Change ot location is likely to be followed by cure. There
are certain drugs which have a distinct value in goitre. But they are
powerful, and would be likely to do the self-medicator much more harm
than good. Only the doctor should prescribe them. In cases where the
thyroid becomes progressively enlarged, in spite of medicinal treatment,
and causes disfigurement or lnconveniftice or the marked symptoms above
mentioned, operation by the surgeon may be advisable.
Exophthalmic goitre Is a form In which, besides tho swelling of th?
thyroid, tho eyes bulge out, there are great nervousness, tremors, heart
palpitation and very quick pulse. This Is a chronic disease, suffered mostly
by women; and the ultimate-result is generally recovery. Anybody having
must certainly consult the doctor and undergo faithfully a course of
treatment. This article is in answer to S. R.

Peat Bogs of Ireland.
WAKH1NOTON, May 24.—Her rev-
olutions may fail, disease may de-
stroy her potato crop and famine her
people, but one feature of Ireland
remains constant—her vast peat bogs,
which furnish a bulky but inexpen-
sive fuel for the island's numerous
poor. Tho National Geographic so-
ciety, from its Washington hcadfjuar-
CUII.LS.
E. It. writes: What is the differ-
once between a real chill of disease
'nnd a nervous chill? 2. How should
ua caro for a patient seized with a
s-uddcn chill?
. Answer: 1, A real, a true chill Is
always accompanied by fever, aa the
clinical thermometer put under tho
'••. nguo will show. Thcro Is a notch
on the scale of this thermometer at
98.6 That Is tho health point; and
any rlso above this indicates fever.
This fever will exist though tho body
surface be cold and pale. With ner-
t'ous chill thero Is no fever and no
change In the skin color and feel. 2.
Hot drinks; hot water bottles to the
extremities; a mustard foot bath. If
not soon revived call a doctor. Some
diseases, like pneumonia, are ushered
In by a chill.
THE STOMACH FUNCTION.
Answer to S. II. 8.: Tho function
of the stomach is to do a little digest-
ing and a Uttle absorbing of tho prod-
ucts of digestion. Its main function
is to prepare food for digestion by

managed pretty well without any

SELF-DRUGGING.
Answer to J. R. C.I Don't try to

doctor's business. And no drug should
ever be used by anybody who doesn't
know its physiological and medical
action under all conditions. Self-

grade of paper. Several processes
also have been devised to distill from
peat a commercial alcohol, a by-
product of this manufacture being
large quantities of ammonium sul-
phate, which is valuable as a fer-
tilizer.
"The peat bogs of Ireland have
been so persistently emphasised in
all economic discussions of tho Irish
people as well as in the literature
of the country that the average in-
dividual has come to think of this
island as having a virtual bog mo-
nopoly, but as a matter of fact there
are eighteen times as'many square
miles of such land in the United
States and Canada as there are in
Ireland, while continental Europe's
bogs aggregate an area as extensive
as that of the French republic. Not
alt bogs produce fuel peat, however."

"Nealy one-seventh of the area TOMORROW: Rocky Mountain Fever
of Ireland is bog land, unfit for cul-
tivation, but this territory, nearly
4,500 square mites, yields an almost
Inexhaustible supply of cheap fuel
which for centuries has kept hun-
dreds of thousands from desperate
suffering during the penetratingly
damp cold of winter.
"I'eat harvesting is an important
industry in tho Irish lowlands, and
one of Ihe factors which commends
it to the poor is that alt the members
of the family can contribute to the
work in proportion lo their full phy-
sical strength. The men can wield
the spade-like slano, carving the turf
into bricks, while the children carry
the wet sod to places In the sun
where it is left to dry for from four
to six weeks In the meantime the
women are busy packing the dried
product in big panicrs slung over the
hacks of diminutive donkeys. These
donkeys carry the peat to market,
and sometimes, it there are more
women than draft animals, Ihe for-
mer will strap panlers across their
own shoulders and aid in solving the
problem of transportation.
"In some of the bogs, where the
percentage of water is unusually high
the 'harvesters' knead the decayed
vegetation wilh their hands and feet
until il Is of sufficient consistency to
be lifted out and placed in the sun.
"Peat, which is a composite of
numerous aquatic plants and mosses
oxidised in a moist atmosphere and
compressed by water, after it has
been thoroughly dried, burns much
more quickly than coal, and it is
considerably cheaper, twelve large
size bricks selling for an English
penny (two cents). In recent years
numerous methods have been de-
vised to improve this fuel of the bogs
by shredding and then compressing
the carbonized growth Into briquets,
which bum very much like coal.
Mixed with crude molasses from
sugar mills It is also used as a for-

A man likes to be seen on the
street with a fine looking man, who
has a million dollar front. But a
girl likes to be seen on the street
with a homely girl In a cheap look-
ing dress. She knows that the com-
parison won't hurt HRR an;-.
The worhl may be growing better.
Rut if there is a Dog Fight and a
Civic Betterment meeting on tho
same night you'll find the crowd at
the Dog Fight.
This would be a better world if
a man would leave his wife as much
when he dies as he did when he was
alive.
Home men are natural born in-
grates. They don't even thank you
for minding their own business for
them.
What has become of the old-fash-
ioned man with the open-faced
stomach who used to adorn the Zo-
diac page in the medical almanac?
Funny how some things work out,
isn't it? A fellow would naturally
suppose that a colored man would
vote right under the Rooster. But
he doesn't.
It is always the mutt who handles
about il per week who gets excited
when he learns that there Is a coun-
terfeit $100 bill in circulation.
And the fellow who loafs and lets
his wife take in washing to keep
pork chops in the skillet can do a
heap of indignating because some
Americans are Unprincipled enough
to work in shops that manufacture
ammunition for the "Alleys."
One thing that gets Father mad is
the fact that Mother believes the
story about Daniel In the Den of
Lions, and the story about Shadrach
in the Fiery Furnace, and the story
about Jonah swallowing the Whale,
but she won't believe his story about
sitting up with a Sick Friend when
he gets hOme at 4 a. m.
When a woman has a fuss with a
neighbor woman and can't find any
flaws in the neighbor woman's Mar-
riage Certificate, she can always ac-
cuse her of stealing the milk off the
back porch.
