—Although Jim Jump-LTp*s fierce "faux pas" disheartened her a bit
Fair Genevieve was still resolved to make their social "hit."
There's nothing," she decided, "that will forge Society's locks
Like opera!" So she managed to secure an opera box.
—"That's fine !" said Jim. "I really like those Broadway girlie shows!"
1 don't refer," sniffed Genevieve, "to trashy things like tho^e!
I mean grand opera, stupid! and we go this very night.
And, Jim, for goodness gracious sake, do try to act polite !"
The METROPOLITAN audience sat up in blank amaze
When Genevieve appeared that night with diamonds all ablaze.
She heard the whispered comments and she nearly burst with joy.
"We' ve triumphed, Jim," she murmured ; "we've arrived at last, my boy !"
4.—But while she gloried as she heard the comments, still she tried
To keep an eye on Jim, who sat bewildered by h*r side;
Ynd every time there was applause she'd pinch him, muttering low.
"Jim, clap your hands as others do and make believe you know !"
f'. 5 —But as the evening triumph grew and more eyes turned her way
She quite forgot her luckless spouse. Her thoughts were far astray.
She saw herself a social queen. The vision made her thrill-
When suddenly she noticed that the house was very still.

She saw that every opera glass upon their box was turned.
The orchestra had even stopped. Their rvptes the singers spurned.
44 'Tis I! I've conquered every one !" she thought—and then a roar, - * *
As the whole house burst with laughter—and the cause—a ripping snore ! // ^

i>—She turned! There, sound asleep, was Jim, his feet upon the rai.
• And from his round, wide open face the snores came like a gale !
She shrieked! She wept! A blush of shame incarnadined her face*
And she grabbed her weary husband and they hurried from the place I

8.—In tears she sought their motor car and flung herself within.
Jjm, half asleep, surveyed her with surprise and great chagrin.
^Oht Jim, what were you dreaming of .^'"sobbed hopeless Genevieve-
Why, of our happy Harlem flat," said Jimmy, "I believe!"
