FEARING
NEGRO WAS REMOVED FROM BELTON
JAIL TO ANOTHER COUNTY YESTERDAY
Belton, May 31.—'The sequel to the
placing of a negro In Jail here yes-
terday charged with attempted crim-
inal assault is that the prisoner was
removed from jail here to prevent a
lynching that was feared.
The details of the removal are not
furnished by the authorities for pub-
lication; but a rumor is to the effect
that the prisoner was taken up Pearl
street about 8 o'clock last evening
and that he was taken to Marlln.
A party of friends and relatives of
Mr. Young in Milam county were, it
is rumored, headed in automobiles for
Belton in army corps proportion,
which would have been augmented
en route, but it wrfs learned of the
removal and the men returned home.
The Conserva-
tive Path
Many years of experience in
banking, convince us that con-
servative methods are always
best—best for the bank and
best for the people.
I
Without being too "hide-bound"
in our dealings, we endeavor to
follow the conservative path.
Temple State
Bank
Guaranty Bond Bank.
State and County Depositary
Commissioners Court,
The court has been In session since
yesterday morning as a board of
equalization, and this afternoon was
especially set aside to hear the bank-
ers.
As representative of the banks of
the county there were present C'has.
M. Campbell, Jas. E. Ferguson and
P. I* Downs of Temple, and J. Z.
Miller, Jr., of Belton, and Will Ran-
cier of Killeen.
It seems from the rendition of the
banks of the county that each render-
ed their capital stock, undivided pro-
fits and surplus at seventy per cent
of its real value, and this assessment
was accepted by the tax assessor. The
commissioners Court held contrary
views and placed the banks of the
county on a basis of one hundred per
cent, including capital stock, surplus
etc.
The argument made by the gentle-
men representing the banks contend-
ed that the Commissioners Court were
discriminating against the banks in
that no other property In the county
was taken on basis of 100 per cent
of real value, and that in truth and
in fact that the farming land was
taken In uniformly at a maximum
value of $40.00 per acre and that in
many instances was worth $75.00
to $100.00 per acre.
The action of the Commissioners
Court In placing the banks on the
value above stated endeJ the matter
for the present, and in all probabil-
ity another suit will be filed this fall
similar to the one recently filed in
| the district court.
It has been held In a number of
cases recently by the Supreme Court
of Texas, notably in the Hill county

case and the case of Dallas county,
that it is the duty of the Commission-
ers Court to equalize values and can-
not discriminate against any person.
Under the full rendition law the Com-
missioners Court is required to place
all property on the rolls at its real
value, and the contention of the
banks this afternoon was not "that
they were rendered too high, but that
their property was not equalized with
other property.

The meeting of the Humane So-
ciety called in the library building)
was postponed until 5 p. m. Tuesday
next. This action was taken because

I who had expressed the wish to do so
| were unable to be present,
Bishop-Horn.
James B. Bishop and Miss Pearl
Horn were united In marriage last
evening about 8 o'clock at the Chris-
tian parsonage by Pastor W. M. Wil-
liams.
This came as a surprise to their
many friends, who nevertheless wish
for them a long and useful life, full
to overflowing with happiness and
prosperity.
John Bishop is one of Belton's best
and most promising young men,
known to all as being possessed of a
full measure of honesty and all that
goes to make true^manhood. He is a
son of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Bishop, and
has spent practically all his life in
this city. Miss Horn, who came here
from Bowie a few months ago to ac-
cept the positiol of head mlliner for
Cochran and Co, has won by her no-
ble traits, a host of friends who can
not be measured by the length of
time they have been acquainted.
They expect to go to housekeeping
at an early date.—Belton News.
