Emancipation day will be
celebrated in becoming style by
the colored population of Bren-
ham, June 19th, in the grove at
the head of Hog Branch.
The oak mast of this and
Burleson counties is said to be
very heavy; and, as hogs are
■unusually plentiful, it is thought
pork will be very cheap next
fall.
The recent rain proved of
Creat advantage to our market
gardners, several of whom in-
form us that vegetables will be
plentiful again within a few
days.
Farmer's tell us that several
roads leading to Brenham are
badly washed by Sunday's rain.
Corn was blown flat to the
ground on the prairie farms,
which will prevent another
plowing.
The dairymen, too, are happy
on account of the timely rains:
the grass will now grow rapidly,
milch cows will fatten and a
considerable increase in the
quantity of milk produced will
be the consequence.

the nation, the finances, etc.,
winding up in a regular old fash-

said to have taken sides; there
was a gouging, scratching, wool-

Monday morning there were
about fourteen pairs of blacked
eyes on black faces. This en-
gagement was kept a profound
secret and only leaked out on
Tuesday. At another saloon
frequented by "colored gentle-
men" a sanguinary set-to took
place between a pair of bucks
who locked horns, pulled wool
and beat one another in approv-
ed style. This was also kept
quiet. The parties arc afraid to
"squeal" for fearof being yanked
up before the mayor and made
to pay trimmings. Whenever a
