Brenham is badly in need of
bettor sido walks.
Say, isn't it about timo lor base-
ball clubs to blossom?
TnE city olection takes place
noxt Tuesday week.
Breniiam neods more railroads,
and needs them badly.
The prospects for a good fruit
crop aro very flattereng.
A good flouring mill is one of
tho prime necessities of this city.
Cuor prospects aro fine, is tho
gonoral opinion of our planters.

Rebel McNei.ly was captured on
Saturday, and last night was safo
in tho Griddings jail.
The Mai-fost committco will
meet at Mechanics' Engino hall
Monday night.
- Our city is greatly in nood of a
new calaboose ; the old rattlotrap
now boing used for that purposo is
a disgrace to. tho city.
yhe awning being erected in
Irone of Mr. T. A. Low's dow
building will add groatly to tho
looks of that portion of tho city.
There is but a limited demand
for young stock cattlo in this coun-
ty. Yearlings aro quoted at $6
and 87 per head, according to sizo
and condition.
A new and interesting foaturo
has boon added to tho owl meet-
ings—wafting highly odoriferous
eggs at lho colorod orators. It is
fun for the spectators, but tho ora-
tors do not onjoy it. Fact.
Brenham cannot afford to allow
any schemo, having for its objeot
tho advancement and prosperity of
the city to go by default; honce tho
necessity of building the Brenham,
lndopondenco and Bra*os Valloy
railway.

Saturday—Brenham Water Com-
pany vs. Tho City oi Brenham,
suit to recover for use of wator
works, as per contract, made by
city council in 1884. Jury empan-
eled on Saturday tho 17th inst.
and the hearing of ovidenco began
on Monday. The evidence was
completed on Friday at noon, and
tho argument was closed about
4:20 Saturday afternoon, when the
caso wont to the jury. The
court allowed tho utmost latitude
to both sides in tho matter of in-
troducing testimony and argu
mont. The jury, aftor being out
not exceeding half an hour,brought
in the following verdict:
'fWo, tho jury, find for tho
plaintiffs for tho rontof thirty-four
hydrants at tho rato of three
thousand doMars per annum for
thirty-fivo hydrants ; with interest
at the rato of eight per cent por
annum for one month's rent, and
from October 1,1886, for one quar-
ter's rent, and from January 1,
1880, for one quarter's rent.
W. P. Devjbr, Foreman."
The grand jury, which rocon-
voned on Thursday, brought in 37
new indictments, and woro dis-
charged for tho term. Thoy sub-
mitted the following
grand jury report:
To tho Hon. I. B. McFarland, District Judge
of Washington county, Texas.
Tho Grand Jurj' at the March
term of the District Court bog
leave to submit tho following re-
port: Wo have carefully and dil-
igently enquired into and investi-
gated offences committed in said
county and have presented fifty-
seven bills of indictments, (fel-
onies,) and sovontcen bills for mis-
demeanors. Wo regret to find
that crimo within tho county is in-
creasing.
We find the poor farm in good
condition and well managed. We
find tho jail well Lcpt and effi-
ciently managed by tho sheriff.
Tho jail, howover, wo think is in
an unsafo condition, and would re-
spectfully suggest to tho commis-
sioners'court at the earliest time
consistent with the finances of tho
county to build a now jail.
K. Hoffmann, Foreman.
