A Giddings special says: The labors
of the district court are about ended
for the present term. The grand jury
after having reported thirty-three
bills fourteen felonies and nineteen
misdemeanors—announced that their
work was finished and were dis-
charged. As no cases are to be tried,
the jurymen for the third week (next
week) were discharged.
Dr. C. W. Boscow pleaded guilty to
two indictments for swindling and
was given two years in each case.
John Moore was convicted for theft of
a horse and given eight years in the
pen. Eleven criminal cases were dis-
posed of this week. \
A protracted meeting is in progress
at the Methodist church church. Eev.
frank, of Waco, has been assisting
Rev. Woolsey this week.
A Hempstead special says : (Sheriff
•Sterling this evening arrested J. B.
Banks, who has been working this
town as a negro doctor, upon a tele-
gram from Sheriff Cone, of Navasota.
•Sheriff Cone will come after the prison-
er this evening.
A Navasota special says: The fol-
lowing is an exact copy of a letter
mailed on the tram and addressed to
and received by W. H. Logan, the
colored presiding elder of this district:
"A warning to W. H. Logan, P. E.,
Navasota, Tex., Nov. 2, A. JL>.. 1893.—
You will be killed to day if you come
to Hempstead. You have treated us
wrong. And we expected to kill you
at First sight. We seen that you are
going to Houston and we are going
too but if you are on the train you
will meet your Death at our sight,
your Friend
Colts six shooter and Wenchesters.
Your Coffin."
There is a rude drawing, no doubt
intended for a dead man in a coffin,
but it looks a good deal like a skinned
catfish on a plank. After this the
note says :
"Kiss your wife."
Logan suspects a person.
Colored Mass Meeting.
Jno. C. Cain, as chairman of the Re-
publican Executire Committee, has
called a mass meeting of the colored
people of Washington county to meet
in Brenham on Saturday, November
11, 1893, for the purpose of electing
delegates to the Colored Men's Na-
tional Convention called by Bishop
Tamer, of Georgia, to meet in Cincin-
nati, November 28,1893, for the pur-
pose of taking into consideration such
plans as will better the condition of
the colored race.

Comptroller Eckels says that
there is no panic, but that banks and
business houses are remarkably
solid. This constant telling a
hungry man that he it not hungry,
doesn't feed him even a little bit.
