THE CITY.
Fresh beer on tap at Boyer's
old stand.
Runaways.—Tuesday there
was two more runaways; no
material damage.
Mayor's Court.—Tuesday—
Charles Newman and Fred
Steinman drunk and down. $1
and trimmings each.
Large Receipts.--The net
receipts of cotton yesterday
footed up 598 bales, which is
pretty good considering the
season.
C. 0. Wood, of the Dallas
Ilerald, was in the city yester-
day obtaining data for the Sep-
tember edition of that excellent
paper.
Mr. J. F. Parks has returned
from the Firemen's convention
at Sherman] While in north
Texas he bought a number of
fine horses which will arrive in
a few days.
Yanked.—J^ast night a cou-
ple of farmers engaged in a
quarrel-and fight, near the Ca-
sino soloon. Officer Neblett
put them in the heater to cool
off. They will explain to the
mayor this morning
Hitch your Teams.—The
mayor requests the Banner to
state that the ordinance against
leaving teams unhitched on the
streets will be strictly enforced.
All violators of the ordinance
will be arrested and fined
A pleasing change awaits one
by calling at Bayer's old stand
for your drinks.
Address.—Tuesday evening
Mr. F. G* Morris, of Austin, de-
livered an address in advocacy
of his city as the site of the
state university. When our re-
porter visited the court house
.at 9:30 just sixteen men were
present.
Honorably Acquitted.—-A
few days ago mention was tfiade
ol the arrest of W. P. Ralston,
on the charge of implication in
the recent robbery. Tuesday
an examination of Ralston was
had before justice Hackworth,
but not a shadow of svidence
was addticcd to show that he
was in the remotest degree con-
nected with the robbery. Mr.
Ralston was discharged.
The Reason.—Pistol shoot-
ing is a matter of common oc-
currence at night, but for up-
wards of a year only one pistol
.shooter has been arrested. A11
exhaustive inquiry into the
ease of the shooting has devel-
oped the fact that the boys
sho"ot off their pistols for the
purpose of reloading them, and
not because of their immunity
from arrest. There is apparent
ly no safe* amusement than
shooting pistols in Brcnham
after dark. Monday night
several beautitul shots were
fired in the southern part of
town.
IV. H. Murphy will be pleas*
edf to see his sriends and the
public generally at Boyer's old
.stand.*

New Church,—'The mem-
bers of St. Peters Episcopal
•church have determined upon
She erection of a new house of
worship. A meeting of the
building committee was held on
Tuesday and the plans and
specifications of Mr. Lnrmour,
architect, of Austin, were adr
opted. The new church is to
be built of brick and will be lo-
cated on Ant street on the lot
now owned by the church. 1 he
. estimated coit-is *5000 and the
edifice will be an ornament to
the city. Proposals tor the
building are invited. See notice
elsewhere.
Best liquors and cigars in the
•city at Boyer's old stand, call
and be convinced
here country darkies are taken
in by regular town sharks. The
shark is always wide awake on
the look for the innocent and
unsuspecting country darky who
has sold one or more bales of
cotton and has his pockets as
full of wealth as an inflated ba-
loon is full of gas. The shark
immediately makes a confident
of the innocent country darkey
and invites him to drink; if he
can then inveigle him into a den,
he is soon initiated ntothe mys-
teries of monte or some other
equally seductive game of
<'keards," the ultimate result is
the country darkey and his
money are soon parted. Should
the card business fail to work
the country darkey is treated
until he is mellow and partially
oblivious, then a dose or two
of whiskey, doctored with
snuff—not enough to be tasted
or to produce nausea—is ad-
ministered, this soon puts the
patient to sleep; the remainder
of the business is soon accom-
plished; when the doctored dar-
key wakes his money is gone
and his memory is confused.
Country darkeys should keep a
sharp look out when in town
with cotton money in their
pockets.
Robbery 0v a Store.—Last
Thursday about dusk three men
robbed the store of a man
named Lossow, whose place of
business is on the public road,
ncar^the Nathan Davis planta-
tion, about twelve miles south-
west of Rretiham, in Austin
county. .The men went into
the store ostensibly to buy
some sardines;Jone of them cov-
ered Lossow with his pistol, the
usual formula was gone through
with and between 540 [and £50
in money was taken. Lossow
and another man who was at
the store with him were tied
with ropes and left. They re-
mained tied about three hour?.
Sheiff Lewis, ol Austin county,
came to this city yesterday and
arrested two young men, well
known citizens, charged with
being implicated in the robbery
and took them to Welcome,
Austin county, for a prelimi-
nary examination. Another
party is yet wanted.
