A KICE ELEVATOR.
The Hnman Electrical Forces!
New Orleans Has Just Completed the First
One Ever llnilt.
The National Rice Manufacturing
company of New Orleans has just com-
pleted the erection of the first rice ele-
vator in the world. The few trials so
far given it have proved the success of
the experiment, and other elevators will
be erected both at New Orleans and
other principal rice points in this coun-
try. The effect will be to revolutionize
the rice trade.
Under the old system the cost of han-
dling and selling the cereal was very
great, besides the inconvenience of send-
ing out samples of each shipment and
tUe impossibility of concentrating ship-
ments owing to the difference in grades
and contracts for particular grades. In
the new elevator system the rice is;
brought in car lots, dumped into theele- j
vator, is cleaned, weighed and ant--mat
jcallv assorted into one of six grades by
delicate machinery and is then loaded
ifito sacks, which are delivered un the
warehouse floor ready for the market.
Outside of the saving in the handling,
the establishment of grades will facili-
tate and systemize the sales, doing away
with delay, cost and inconvenience and
establishing the rice industry on the same
basis as wheat and other cereals. The
opinion of the rice men heretofore lias al-
ways been that it was impossible to grade
rice.—St. Louis Globe-Democrat.

Two Hucks at One Shot.
Tim Hennessey of Indian Creek, who
Was in town last Saturday, tells us that
iiis 12-year-old stepson, Tommy Wallace,
killed two deer the ,Sunday before in a
remarkable manner. The boy, while
hunting in the mountains near Indian
Creek, shot a large buck and killed it at
the first fire. Just at the slain deer fell
another buck presented itself right along-
side the dead one. Young Wallace,
thinking he had won laurels enough for
a boy in one day, concluded not to shoot
again. But when he started to get his
game, what was his surprise to see this
one also fall to the ground, and when ho
reached the spot he found two dead deer.
He had shot them both at the first lire.
The bullet which went through the neck
of the first had entered the breast of the
second deer.—Trinity Journal.
