Repddiatcon in Mississippi.-A wonderful change
seems recently to have taken place in Mississippi relative
to the repudiation ol the public debt, and a large number
of theld advocates of this disgraceful doctrine are now
abandoning U "Mr. Brown the Democratic nominee for
Governor-has declared that he is in favor of paying the
public debt, and evenGov. McNutt has declared that a por
i ; r; nHcrht tn he naid." The Columbus Democrat
says:
"In everydirection, with the exception of a few whose
hardihood will admit of no retreat, those who had been
foremost in the brilliant charge, which they expected to
make against all State debts, have been forced to fall back
upon their original position, the Repudialidn of the Union
Bank Bonds The sophistry with which they maintain,
this upon ihe grounds ofa violationof the Constitution m
the enactment of the chaiter ofuhe Union Bank, and the
magnitude of the debt, and the mercenary feelings of the
people to which they appeal, will, they hope, sustain them
in the approlching contest. BuMheir .hopes are delu-
sive, their day has jrast." : ' " ' 5-
The democrat a&csjc
"Honest men will not refuse to pay their, honest debts,
and that however inconvenient it may be to liquidate seven
millions, lhepebple of Mississippi will do it rather, than
bear thejibce and jeers, the contempt and denunciation of
the virtuous and honorable?portion of mankind."
The Governor of Mississippi has issued a proclamation
requiring the Legislature of that State to meet at Jackson,
on the first Monday in July.
Rains' have fail t-n so frequency during the last two
weekv and in such abundance, that the ground is com-
pletely saturated, and fears are entertained that the
cotton crops wrill be greatly injured. The corn and pota
toe crops are generally too far advanced to suffer from
this source. t

PUBLIC MEETING AT BASTROP.
Pursuant to adjournment, the citizens of Bastrop Coun-
ty convened in the town of Bastrop, on Saturday the 27th
day of May; 1843. Whereupon Thomas J. Hardiman,
Esq, was called to the chair, and L C. Cunningham ap-
pointed Secretary. The meeting being organized, pro-
ceeded to business ; when, after some discussion, the re-
port of the commitjee (appointed at a previous meeting to
nominate candidates tor the Convention) was read, by
which Messrs. M. M. Hill, Thomas J. Hardiman, B.
Sims, Josiah Wilbarger and Dr. E. Mabry, were nomi-
nated and recommended as gentlemen suitable toi repre-
sent the interests of said county in the Convention afoie-
said Report adopted.
The folio cvingresolutions were then offered and pas-
sed :
Be it resolved, That an election shall be held in the
town of Bastrop, on the fourth day of July next, for the
purposg of electing five delegates to represent this county
in.said convention, and that the chief justice of said comi-
ty be requested to hold said election, end to give certifi-
cates to the individuals elected.
The Secretary then presented the following preamble
andTesolutions, which were read and adopted :
"WhereaSfUhVvery welcome intelligence has beer, receiv-
ed of the recent glorious achievments of Commodore
Moore, and, whereas, also, we have with regret a,id
extreme r ortification read the President's late procla-
mation, denouncing Cora. Moore as a pirate, etc.; and
inasmuch as the crisis has arrived when the freemen cf
Texas snqtild no looser keep silent, or view with in-
difference the subversion of their liberties, therefore,
be it m ., ''j
Ixesotecd. That we consider the orders of government
, requiring Com. Moore to perform duties, and at thp same
lime withhrdding from him the means necessary to carry
them into execution, to have been tyrannical and oppress-

Resolved, That we can but look upon the 'late procla-
mation of the President, in relation to Commodre Mooie,
-with indignation aud 'disgust, arid pronounce it an act of
the most wanton abuse of power to be found in the annals
of modern history, and are bound to conclude that it eman-
ates either from a heart depraved and at war with the in-
terests and liberties of the Republic ; or from the head of
a man blinded by malace or deluded by insanity.
Rusolved, That we deem it the dutv of freemen to fix
the seal of their unqualified disapprobation upon all acts
of misrule, tyranny nnd abuse of power, by any public
functionary, 'vhuther arising from imbecility or any other
cause.
Resolved? That the riht to pass laws in secret session,
as assumed by our past Congress, is dangerous, impolitic
and unknown to our Constitution, and that the secret act of
'Congress authorizing the sale-of the navy, (if any such
act was passed,) was not only contrary to the interests and
wishes of the citizens of Texas, but was an usurpation of
legislative power witnout parallel w a republican govern-
