,r individuality of animals.
Ito Two Brutes of a Kind An Alike In
Thftlr C'haructerUtU'H.
My dear ilr, not only does one Hon
differ from another, but each Is totally
different frotn all the rest. It 1b the
same with other animals. Just as no
two men are alflte In character, so no
two Hons, no two tigers, or two Polar
bears are alike. When you know an
animal's character then you know
how to treat him. For Instance, one
Uon will do his beat work only If
you coax and pet and praise him, and
at a single angry word he will lose his
nerve and skulk away. But the little
firm nest, and Beverlty that would be
useless In his case would be Imperative
with another lion, who would take ad-
vantage of perpetual kindness and
neglect his work. Then, again, there
will be a tb'jrd lion, whoBe head is
only to be reached through his stom-
ach--who will do anything for food, but
nothing for anything else. When you
are training an aulmal, you will come
to learn that there is some fault In his
character, something which renders
him unreliable. In such a case, if I
decide that f irther time will not be
profitably spent on the animal, Mr.
Hagenbeck sells him to a menagerie.
It took an entire year to teach them
all to go to their proper places on en-
tering the ring. It is very important to
place them In a certain order. You
will notice that the bears come In and
go out apart from the lions and tigers.
Bears get on well together, and so do
lions and tigers, but if a lion gets near
a bear he will probably attack him.
Not so very long ago a tiger who raced
out of the ring rather too soon
overtook a Polar bear, and bit
his foot so severely that the poor old
fellow went lame for weeks and could
not do hi& work.—Interview in London
with Trainer Sawada.
PRIVILEGES OF DIPLOMATS.
Above the Law In tlie Countries to
Which They Are Sent.
The recent arrest of a diplomat's son
for larceny and his subsequent dis-
charge as a matter of International
courtesy, brings to the front one of
the medieval customs that have
survived to this day. Outside of the
District of Columbia such an Incident
excites curiosity and also some ad-
verse comment. At Washington, how-
ever, people are accustomed to recog-
nising diplomats as above the law.
TlAlr carriages, for instance, are en-
titled to. although they do not always
take, the right of way. Few, If any.
of the ministers abuse their privileges.
Commenting on the subject a lawyer
said to a New York Times reporter:
"There is no more reason In this age
of rapid transit and instantaneous
communication around the earth for
making a diplomat exempt frrfm the
operation of criminal law than there
would be la granting the same sort of
indulgence to those of our own citi-
zens who have red hair. Two or three
hundred years ago there was some
sense In the International law which
holds an ambassador or plenipoten-
tiary sacred. They were far away
from their home, with which they
communicate only at long Intervals.
They represented their respective gov-
ernments absolutely and were com-
pelled to act wholly upon their own
responsibility. Such, of course, is not
the case now. The minister, generally
speaking, now simply carries out the
cabled instructions of his government.
If arrested for crime, thrown into
prison, or even executed, it Is doubtful
if the Interests of those whom he rep-
resents would particularly suffer."

How the Dako of Cornwall's "Smokon"
Farad Beneath the Wave*.
Private advloes to a London tobacco
dealer give the Information that some
7,000 of the costly cigars shipped for
the use of the Duke of Cornwall and
bis suite while in Canada have been
recovered from the hull of the wrecked
liner Luslt&nta, on the east coaat of
Newfoundland. In all 10,000 of the
blfhestMslasB cigars, intended for royal
use, were on the Lualtanla, packed In
hermetically sealed cases. They weer
consigned to the citadel at Quebec to
await the arrival of the Ophir. Each
cigar was valued at 3 shillings. So
choice were the costly "smokes" that,
in cue the crew might break open the
cases, they were packed in the extreme
stern of the ship and bolted behind
heavy planking. When it became
known to the islanders that the duke's
cigars were part of the Lusltania's car-
go, a patrol was establiahed to search
fot boxes on the beach. All the smok-
ers on the island reveled in dreams of
l-ahUllng cigars without sttAt. Specu-
lators wanted them alao. But their
dreams came to nothing. Divers, after
ten weeka' work, have now got at the
cigars, and, according to the cable,
have aaved T.000 in good condition.
The other 3,000 were washed out of the
wreck. Meanwhile, however, the duke's
cigar order had been duplicated In
London.—London Express.
