Righting Public Wrongs.
There is one sure way to redress a pu b-
Hc wrong. If the people who are in-
jured take enough interest in the mat-
ter to fight the evil, in this age of the
world they can destroy it every time.
They have only to arouse public opinion
solidly against it Let them agitate,
petition', write, call mass meetings and
speak out powerfully from truth and
honest conviction, and in time the evil
must fall, though it tower mountain
high. There should be no let np till the
monster fabric falls. This may some-
times take a long time, but the fabric
must go.
The trouble with those who Buffer
from injustice is that they only sit down
and whine, instead of arising and fight
ing by the peaceable weapons of elo-
quence and argument. It is so much
easier to sit down and whine. It is so
much easier to lay all blame upon the
bloated monopolists and oppressors. It
is easier even to blow the monopolists
heads off with dynamite, only that he
who resorts to this method runs the risk
of getting his own head taken off. Be
sides, dynamite is not a convincing ai
gument; but logic, justice and good wi
are, and they win at last every time, i
our day an aroused public opinion is a
force against which no power on earth
can stand. It will melt down any mo-
nopoly; it will dissolve away any in-
iquity. Arouse it and see.
But most of us are too lazy and re-
gardless of the common good to try it.

Room for All.
One is rather surprised to have Mr
Edward Atkinson say in The Forum
that there is nothing he despises so much
as bare statistics. Then, as if to clinch
the announcement, he immediately pro-
ceeds to quote from Sir Edwin Arnold's
poem, "The Light of the World," some
lines about "Love, which is sunlight of
peace, age by age to increase," etc.
This increasing love and good will to
one'* fellow man is what Mr. Atkinson
hopes will be the constant tendency in
this his beloved country as time goes
on. Then be tells us that here in Amer-
ica we have room for all the immigrants
that can come to us. No one can "fore-
see any lack of land within any com-
putable period of time, for the reason
that no one yet knows the productive
capacity of an acre of land anywhere."
He calls to our attention the mining of
aero of unoccupied land in Texas, in
the south aad on the "abaodoiwdJaaM"
of the east They only want the touch
of an enlightened agriculture to make
them bant with fnhw
As to our immigrants, in spite of all
the millions that have come tons in the
PMt ten yean, wages for labor has
steadily increased. And finally, as to
the slowness with which the foreigners
learn the English aad go in for educa-
tion, the writer sends the following
home thrust, which for neatness is hard
to exoel:
I have yet to bear of any greet crowd of
foreigner* in any congested section of oar
oountry who have been a* slow in recent r-nr-
lu their development of schools aad BagMsb

and means committee for passage

Anarchist and Socialist.
Some years ago socialism as a politics
was, in the public mind, practically
what anarchy is now. The change that
has come over its spirit will best be
shown in the utterances of professed so-
cialists at the May Day labor celebra-
tions in Europe.
In London the great labor procession
was largest, amounting to nearly half a
million. But the speeches, made by the
most noted labor agitators in Great
Britain, counseled nothing violent, and
the resolutions adopted looked to noth-
ing wickeder than petitioning parlia-
ment for an eight hour labor law. At
the women's trade union meeting in
London the same subject was upper-
most-getting shorter hours of work.
In Paris, indeed, the proverbial Gallic
excitability slopped over somewhat when
M. Valliant said in his speech that this
year the workingman would deliver to
the French government his ultimatum
on the subject of an eight hour labor
day, and if this did not secure the re-
quired result then the workingmen
would take things into their own hands.
But this speaker was immediately sat
upon by another, who said he would
never counsel violence, and that he was
an enemy of the recent dynamite man-
ifestations in Paris.
At Vienna, at Amsterdam and else-
where the meetings amounted to enthu-
siastic eight boor, labor demonstrations,
and where sq'.xalistic speeches were
made they were mild in tone. There
were some bomb explosions, but it does
not appear that any labor or socialist
organization had any part in them.
The socialist workman of Europe ap-
pears just now to be more concerned
with getting shorter labor hours by par-
liamentary means than with blowing
the heads off kings and emperors. The
line is being distinctly drawn between
socialist and anarchist.
