The cotton and corn crops are
' rivals for greatness this year.
The corn has tho best of the cot-

Jim Rucker, who was sent to

THE city council should by all
means call for volunteers to scout
through the high weeds on some
of the vacant lots. Spanish ar-

may be lurking in the dark re-

Simply a suggestion, gentlemen.
The cotton is making all right
under the hot sun we are having
put to ul at this time. When we
feel disposed to growl, let us
think that the farmer is having a
picnic and that he will gather
fine cotton crops the coming
season as well as fill his crib full
of feed stuffs.

whose unceasing energy and ac-
tivity in a large measure it owes
its present existence.
The third annual session which
convened in Brenham Friday af-

by as large a turnout as was
hoped for. The blame for the
shortago in attendance was laid
on tho shoulders of President
Burgess for selecting "an un-

which unanimously prevailed re-

To Farmers and tikiners.
Wo think it proper to advise you at this
time of the action that will be taken by cot-
ton buyers with reference to the prioel thai
will be paid for different sized bales the ooni-
ing season, in order that you may have am-
ple notice and an opportunity to so arrange
as to secure the full benefit* thereof. You
"are doubtleas thoroughly familiar with the
movement for the adoption of a uniform
square bale 24 inches in width tod H inche*
in length ani we deem it unneceatary
dwell on the subject further than to say that
bales of this size wHl insure to the farmer
savings in ocean freight of hot le»$ than
$2,000,000 per annum on the Texas crop.
Some may think this would be saved to the
transportation companies Wily, but we and
all other cotton buyears, from practical ex-
perience, know that any advance fat freight*
compels u* to pay leas for cotton, and de-
clines in freights enable in to p«y more, and
that any saving in freight goos into the pock-
et of the farmer by means of better prices.
Orders for ice cream, frapine,
sherbets and fancy loes filled on

We would therefore urge the ginners
adopt this change and the farmer* to use

should not ask the ginntr to make a b

should not bring more than 1600 pounds

We are reliably informed that a vast nu«_
ber of boxea will be changed to this standaid
