The Scranton witchcraft case'
is a strange development in
these days. A so-called witch
doctor figures in it, having
been called to attend the daugh-
ter of a Mrs. Kochert, who was
wasting in illness. The learn-
ed man decided that witches
had been taking away the
child's rest, and prescribed a
strip of paper tor her breast to
keep them aloof, taking care
to have no knot in the paper;
a brier stick, with which to beat
the cradle, after having dried
one leaf of the brier on the
stove; and bits of paper cov-
ered with molasses, to be taken
internally. But incessantly
whipping the cradle did not
yield sleep to the poor little
victim, and she had no appe-
tite for molasses; so that she
died. The neighbors of Mrs
Kochert agreed that the child
had perished from being be-
witched, and the case became
public because a Mrs. Snyder,
who was accused of being the
witch, sued the sorrowing
mother lor the accusation. The
evidence before the Justice
showed a belief in witchcraft
among several ol the witnesses.
Fortunately, these are not the
days of burning witches at the
stake; but how much does there
still remain of the superstition
of two centuries ago —[N. Y.

Piles are frequently preceeded by a sense
of weight in the back, loins and lower part
