Killing Saakes by the XU«.
"I was running oa a road in South,
western Pennsylvania," said an old
engineer to a Philadelphia reporter,
"when I killed two miles of snakes
in three minutes. It had been a wet
and cold spring, and the same weath-
er conditions had existed to about
the middle of May, and it seems that
all the snakes in that part of the
country had started to emigrate, and
aa the rails had become warm under
the heat of the sun the reptilss na-
turally enough found the glittering
steel a smooth and comfortable high-
way, and they juat coupled up, one
taking hold of the other's tail, and
started down the track. I happened
to be coming along and we were mak-
ing twenty-five miles an hour when
we met the procession. My fireman
saw the varmiata first, and he com-
pletely ooilapied, but when I per-
ceived what we were up against I
potted the throttle wide open, let the
wad drop aad smashed two miles of
snakes i« lass than three minutes."

A Great Opportunity.
Mr. E. W. Kirkpatriok, the well
known fruit grower of MoKinney,
Texas, recently made a trip with
other distinguished horticultur-
ists through the central portion
of East Texas over the line of the
Houston East A West Texas Ry.
They were all charmed with the
oountry—its soils, plantations,
orohards, gardens, towns and
psople. Mr. Kirkpatriok„ in
speaking of this section says:
"It is a veritable paradise.
The farms and orohards are
models of neatness. It is a great
country; it is more—it is im-
mense. The soils are just what
is required to give the best
quality to fruits. The drainage
is perfect, and I see nothing to
hinder extensive orchard plant-
ing and truck growing through-
out the oountry. The land will
grow anything. I saw fields of
ootton and oorn equal in every
respect to those grown in the
black lands. I saw fruit trees
loaded down with their previous
fruits. I saw crops on land
whioh has been in constant culti-
vation for over one hundred years
equal to crops of the newest lands
in the best agricultural districts.
In fact we were surprised,-
charmed,—dazed by the magni
ficenoe of the country, and the
beet of all is the people are
healthy and prosperous and the
lands oheap. Those who wish a
home in a general good oountry
where they can have grain, and
cotton, and stook, and fruit, and
vegetables, and fowls, and fish
with milk and honey and all that
is good in life, should not fail to
examine "God's Country" in
East Texas."
This is the section of East
Texas, the Seoretary of the State
Horticultural Society talks about
so much and which he calls
"God's Country."
The Houston East & West
Texas Ry., recently issued a fol-
der giving full description of this

esting reading matter. A copy
