to the ground early today. One

valued at $150,000, on which
there was full insurance. The
fire started by the dropping of a
lighted oigarette in one of the
dressing rooms after the close < f

were many women in the theater
rehearsing at the time the fire

Insurgent Barracks Butned—But Little
Progress in 8amar.
Manila., Jan. 1.—Lieutenant
C. D. Rhodes of the8ixth Caval-
ry, accompanied by two order-
lies, wheD within six miles of
Manila today, came across 20
armed insurgents in a cuartel, or
barracks. The insurgents shouted
"Amerioanosl" and Lieutenant
feined a retreat. But in reality
he took the cuartel in flank and
drove out the insurgents, captur-
ing two rifles, three revolvers
and some ammunition. Rhodes
then burned the barracks down
and proceeded to Manila.
General Wheaton's report from
the Island of Samar indicates
that little has been accomplished
there. The attitude of the na-
tives is even more unfriendly
than ever before. General Chaf-
fee will probably visit the island
in order to investigate the state
of affairs prevailing there.
On the other hand, in Batangae
Province the organized cam-
paign against the insurgents is
progressing favorably, and
speedy results are expected.

mon and Will Krug assistants.
The 2nd Ward box was in the
Healy building on Sandy street

The 3rd Ward box was in the

been elected would have been
disqualified. Mr. Tucker was
easily elected.
The eleotion resulted as fol-
lows: Tuoker 107. Bluir 7.

The married folks of the city,
taking inspiration from the ball
at Mrs. Ross' Wednesday night,
lave decided to organize a club
and meet at Lusk's hall onoe a
week. This is a splendid idea and
should be taken up with avidity.
This social intermingling of the
best families of the city, once a
week will be most refreshing and
)rofitabie. That old idea of
marrying and chopping out of
society is a relic of puritanism.
