Denunciation of Liquor Traffic.
Rev. D. J. O'Sullivan, a member of
the Vermont state legislature, is the
first Catholic priest ever elected to
that body. Mr. O'Sullivan was invited
to attend a dinner given by the anti-
prohibitionists, but was unable to at-
tend, H* wrote a letter in which he
said: "Personally I am not irrevocably
wedded to any system of regulating
the liquor traffic. I have never said
one word against the prohibitory law,
but I am heartsick of the sanctimoni-
ous hypocrisy, the lying, the private
and public corruption and the whole
train of evils connected with its en-
forcement"
The preliminary report of the
census bureau places the cotton
crop of 1902-03 at 10,827,168
bales of 500 pounds, including
the linters,
fjreparing the *y«tcm tor parturition, thus assist-
ne Nature, and (hortemng labor. The painful

Morning sickness, or nausea arising from preg-
nancy Is prevented by relieving the stomach from
tha pressure brought to hear on it by the expand-
ing organ, and by which it Is influenced through
sympathy.
As pregnancy advances, tha breasts enlarge,
become swollen, hard and tight. Long before the
child is born, they are preparing for the secretion
of milk. It Is Important to successful child rear-
ing that these glands receive early consideration.
Mother's Friend softens the skin, relieves the
pressure, and facilitates the secretion of Life
Fluid. Undeveloped and occluded ducts, and
breasts hard caked shortly after delivery, are i.ie
res'ilt of non-treatment and likely to culminate in
Mammary Abscess from which the patient suf-
fers excruciating pain and is left with these
functional organs permanently Impaired.
Mother's Friend is always applied externally
and rubbed into the flesh over the region of pain.
Softness, pliability and expansion are given to
tha muscles, tissues, fibres and sinews, allowing
the elasticity necessary to bring comfort white
with heavy burden, and cause easy Issue of the
child. Try it. Of all druggists $1 00. Oui book

In the Good Old Day3.
Describing life in Scotland late in
the eighteenth oentury, a recent writer
says: "Many a g«od wife shook her
head over the modern upsettingness of
the hinds, who must nee<*9 have their
woolen sarks changed and washed
like the gentles, instead of wearing
one straight on for six months, as in
the good old days, and then having it
cleansed at Whitsunday and Martin-
mag by leavirg it to soak for four-and-
twenty hours in a tub of manure;
then rinsing it out in cold water and
hanging it un to drv."
The Smith Family.
Smith is naturally the dominating
name in the new London directory.
There are some 2,000 plain Smiths.
There are also, surprising as it may
seem, seventeen other ways of spell-
ing the name, varying from Smythye
to Schmidt Nor does this take into
account such obvious relatives as
Smithson, Smlthers, etc.

Millions in a Mantle.
One of the marvels of the recent
Durbar was the display of jewelry and
precious stones worn by the Maharaja
Galkwar of Baroda, who wore his
state mantle of woven pearls with its
arabesque border of diamonds, rubies,
f emeralds and sapphires, whose value,
estimated by a famous London Jew-
eler, is $6,000,000.
Scotch Saloon Statistics.
Airdrie has more saloons in rela-
tion to its size than any other town in
Scotland. There are 42 for every 1,000
inhabitants. Coatbridge and Renfrew
come next on the list. Ayr has the
worst record for drunkenness—57.6
charges yearly for every 1,000 inhabi-
tants.
Amusements for French Soldiers.
A society has been organized in
Paris the object of which is to prevent
the soldiers at the French barracks
from forming bad habits. The society
has provided wholesome games for
the army—chess, cards, deck quoita
and ping-pong. So far 140,000 soldiers
have been provided with games.
An Automatic Pistol.
The steamship Glenogie recently
brought the news to Vancouver, B. C.,
that Lieut. Hino of the Japanese in-
fantry had invented an automatic pls«
tol which will fire 80 cartridges a min-
ute. The invention has been taken
over by the Japanese government.
Hast a Virtue.
After all this debate about lemon
juice and the typhoid germ one thing
is still clear—it improves the flavor of
the oyster.
Identified by Tattoo Marks.
Tell-tale tattoo marks recording
their constancy in love identified ttfo
prisoners in North London recently
as deserters. "I love Lottie Barton,"
confessed the left arm of one, while
tha other man bore the initial letters
of the name of the beloved object.
