Mr- Braunstetter, who had the
misfortune to get one of his hands
mangled at the Weikel gin several
days ago, is reported dangerously ill
from the effects of catching cold in
his wound.
Some drummers who arrived in
theaifcv on Wednesday night just
afterrain attempted to walk up
to the hotel. One of them had the
misfortune to fall in a ditch and
was soaked all over.
Yesterday afternoon the spectacle
was presented on the streets of four
large, able-bodied boys riding one
little scrub poney. There ought to
be a society for the prevention of
cruelty to animals here.
Although his physician pro-
nounced him nearly convalcscent
two weeks ago Mr. Heine, the court-
house janitor, is still confined to his
home and has not made his appear-
ance down town in two months or
more.
Charley Nolan, colored, was fined
$1 and costs in the mayor's court
yesterday on a charge of disturbing
the peace, and a white man, who is a
stranger in the city was taxed a simi-
lar sum for imbibing too freely of
the ardent.
Quite a refreshing shower of rain
visited the city on Wednesday night
and cooled the atmosphere consider-
ably. It began directly after sup-
p^r and fell in torrents until after
10 o'clock and then fell at intervals
during the balance ol the night. The
streets, alleys and the courthouse
square presented the appearance of
rivulets "find miniature lakes.
Mr. Paeille, the minister of the
German Methodist church, who re-
cently returned from a nine-months'
visit to Illinois and some of the
other western states, says that
while he was away he visited several
creameries, all of which were doing
a big paying business and were a
great help to the farmers. He is
heartily in favor of the establish-
ment of a creamery here and says it
will be a big enterprise for Bren-
ham.
Miss Benita Byrnes and Miss
Nettie Estes, the charming young
misses who preside at the postoffice,
have a rare collection of pictures,
including crowned heads, actors and
actresses, prize-fighters and pro-
fessional beauties. They are col-
lected from cigarette packages and
there are about three hundred of
them in one frame. In addition
the wnl'p are covered with fine
lithographs, illustrated calendars
and various bric-a-brac.
Sebe Crenshaw, the jail porter,
struck a streak of luck on Thursday.
He had a horse stolen from him
year before last and made up his
mind long ago that he would never
see his nag again. But on Thurs
day he spied a colored man who
gave his name as Moses—riding the
horse in town and recognized it as
his property at once. He lost no
time in putting in his claim to the
animal and it was surrendered to
him. The darkey in possession
said that he had borrowed the horse
from another darkey, living near
Chappell Hill, to ride to town.
Mb. Irvin Handle, who was in the
city the other day, proved up ten
thousand dollars worth of claims in
vendor's lien notes against the es-
tate of the late James H. Holt.
Mb. Sim R. Carothers, of Lampa-
sas, traveling agent of the Houston
Post, is in the city again rustling
up subscriptions.
The regular monthly term of Jus-
tice Curry's court for .the transac-
tion of civil business will commence
on next Monday.
"Hold on, sis," exclaimed one of
the Ram bo boys, as he paused at the
door. "Don't go into the house.
The minister is making a call."
"How do you know?" inquired his
littte sister.
"Can't you hear ma talking? She's
got her Sunday voice on."—Chicago
Tribune.
