John Ray
Whisman, 62,
died Sunday,
Nov. 2, 2008, in
Port Aransas after
a long battle with
brain cancer.
He was born
Sept. 17, 1946,
in Omaha, Neb., to Ray and Eileen
Rekofski Whisman.
After graduating from the Univer-
sity of Nebraska at Omaha, Whisman
served two years in the U.S. Army in
Alaska.
Following his military service, he
began a 37-year career with Procter
and Gamble, retiring as director of
sales for the United States, Puerto
Rico and Guam.
He enjoyed horse racing, fishing,
golf and life in Port Aransas.
Survivors include his parents; his
wife, Johnie Swenson Whitman of
Port Aransas; a daughter, Tiffany
(John) Gwynn; a son, Bill Whisman,
and three grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held
Thursday, Nov. 13, at 2 p.m. at the
Westlake Hills Presbyterian Church,
7127 Bee Caves Rd., in Austin.

open the gallery that’s located in a
former pharmacy building at 323 N.
Alister St. The gallery showcases the
works of more than 225 artists who
work with oils, watercolors, ceramic,
wood and other media.
Just up the street at 430 N. Alister
St., in a former city/county jail facil-
ity, volunteers monitor a bank of
computers that have been set up for
local residents, Winter Texans and
other island visitors to access the
Internet and perform other tasks free
of charge.
The art center’s mission is to pro-
mote artists and their work. The Port
Aransas Computer Center’s task is
to provide high speed Internet, laser
printing, CD and DVD burning,
memory card reading, image scanning
and other computer services.
Both of these entities could be op-
erating in a few years under the same
roof of a new, 5,400 square-foot facil-
ity that would replace the old police
department building.
It depends on a lease agreement
between the City of Port Aransas and
Nueces County, which owns the prop-
erty. The next step would be to lease
the property to the art center.
If that task is accomplished within
the next 60 days, it would trigger the
launch of a fund-raising effort by the
art center’s board of directors and its
members to raise $775,000 to build
the new facility.
“We already have raised $35,000,
and we will do fund-raising for the
next two to three years and seek grants
from foundations,” said Dan Winship,
chairman of the fund-raising commit-
tee for the art center.
“This is just the first step to build
a 4,000 square-foot art center and a
1,400 square-foot computer center,”
Winship said.

After the election, God is still God
As I am writing this, America is
wondering who the next president
will be. As you are reading this, we
should have a new president.
What I have come to understand is
that whoever has won, the outcome is
not going to change God. The posi-
tion that God holds is not affected by
the election. God is still God, and we
need to remember that.
My trust is not in the government,
my trust and hope is with God. The
fact is, I’m still going to work, I’m
still going to pay my bills, I’m still
going to raise my children, I’m still
going to be married to a great guy.
I refuse to let the politicians dictate
my joy, peace, happiness and my
success.
In Isaiah chapter 9 verse 6, it talks
about the government being on God’s
shoulders. What this means is that
God is in control.
We don’t have to
freak out about all
of the stuff that we
hear on the news.
We just have to
have a relation-
ship with God. He
says that He will
never leave us or
forsake us, and
that He will always make a way of
escape for us. You either believe it,
or you don’t. I choose to believe it.
I choose to walk in the security that
God is my provider and that He will
look out for me. Josh 24:15.
But, if serving the Lord seems
undesirable to you, then choose for
yourselves this day who you will
serve, whether the gods your forefa-
thers served beyond the river, or the
gods of the Amorites, in whose land
you are living. But as for me and my
household, we will serve the Lord
So, as for me and the Grubbs
house, we will serve the Lord. I will
not give up, let up or shut up. I will
serve God with my whole heart and
not live in fear. I encourage you to
do the same. Take some time to read
the Bible. Join us at Island Worship
Center to study and examine God’s
plan for your life.

Worship Center.
center, said there likely is more artis-
tic talent per capita in Port Aransas
than anywhere else she has visited.
That includes musicians, painters,
sculptors and other artists.
“It’s just amazing,” she said.
“We are not too intimidated to raise
$775,000. We think it will happen
and some funding is in place. We’re
confident we will be able to raise the
money,” Karen Winship said.
Anyone interested in the project
can pledge a donation of $200 to
purchase one square foot of the new
combined art/computer center.
Or one can become a member of the
art center. Annual student member-
ships cost $15 for those age 18 and
under; individual memberships cost
$30; a family membership is $50 and
a lifetime membership is $1,000.
There also is a patron category for
those who contribute from $100 to
$5,000.
Anyone who wants more informa-
tion can visit either center’s Web site
at www.portaransasartcenter.org. or
www.portacomputerclub.com.
Dittberner’s “Drop in and Draw”
class convenes from 9:30 a.m. to
12:30 p.m. on Tuesdays. Other classes
include oil painting and soft pastels
with Donna Garven; beginner/in-
termediate watercolor with Kay
Bamebey.
Upcoming workshops include
jewelry making with Sue McClurg;
writing in context with instructor
Beverly Charles, and Raku pottery
making with Ken Barnett.
The art center is open from 11 a.m.
to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday,
and from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
The Port Aransas Computer Center
is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mon-
day through Friday and from 10 a.m.
to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Port Aransas City Manager Mi-
chael Kovacs said the lease arrange-
ment would allow the city and its
residents an opportunity to “provide
assistance to the art center in getting
a brand new building with a separate
area for a computer center.
“The city will do the finish out. The
current schedule is three years out, so
the art center can do its fund-raising
campaign,” Kovacs said.
“They will demolish the old (po-
lice) building and build in its place
an art center. The city will house the
computer center somewhere in a city
facility or provide a temporary build-
ing to house the computer center,”
he said.
“This is a valuable community
effort that we can do with the art
center, and the volunteers can run
the operation very cost effectively,”
Kovacs said.
