more than a wilderness. Practically unsettled, infested by
Indians arid outlaws. Stages were robbed, passengers killed by
Indians, and all the romantic and perilous things done that have
made the history of the west one of thrilling incident and daring
bravery.
About a hundred and twenty miles from San Antonio, in
the northern part of the Hill Country, the stage line crossed a
small stream. This stream is known as Comanche creek, be-
cause of the fact that in the hills along its winding course the
Comanche Indians were wont to lay in ambush for travelers on
the mail route, and kill or rob them.12
