Tonight’s Game Concludes
Baseball Practice Opens
At End of Spring Practice
Coach Higgins has announced
that Baseball practice will be de-
layed until the completion of
Spring football workouts. Bad
weather has forced this decision.
All boys who are going to try
for the Tech team this spring
should contact Coach Higgins
this week. Equipment was issued
during this week to the boys al-
ready signed up.
Practice will begin the day af-
ter football is over. Catchers and
pitchers have been working out
and will continue, weather per-
mitting. •
Lamar will open its season
with the University of Houston
on March 14 in Houston.
Coach Higgins has expressed
the desire to play several of
Tech’s home games in Stuart
Spring Training is
Suspended During
Inclement Weather
Bad weather caused the post-
ponement of Spring football prac-
tice early this week. Coach Hig-
gins said that workouts would
begin Thursday, weather permit-
ting.
Dan Page, University of Texas
backfield star, assisted Higgins
several days last week. He was
able to work outside only one
day, with instruction on the other
days being mental rather than
physical.
The rest of spring practice will
be devoted to the running of “T”
plays. This will include forma-
tions against different defenses
and the learning of plays and
positions agaiqst these defenses
from a split “T”.
If time and weather permits,
some of the more specialized acti-
vities may be practiced, according
to Coach Higgins. Punting will
be stressed during this time.
So far, many of the fundamen-
tals of the “T” have been prac-
ticed in the gym only, with much
needed outside practice being un-
available.
The defenses used against a “T”
differ from that against our old
single-wing, thus creating alto-
gether qew assignments and
blocking angles. This is primar-
ily what Coach Higgins is teach-
ing during Spring Practice.
Stadium if arrangements can be
made.
Earl Richmond and Wesley
Curtis both professional ball play-
ers and students at Tech, will as-
sist Coach Higgins during base-
ball season.
Richmond will serve as an in-
field coach while Curtis will work
with the pitchers.
This is the first year that the
Lone Star Conference is having
a conference champ in baseball.
Sam Houston, Sul Ross and Tech
are the only entries thus far in
conference play.
Sam Houston has always been
an advocate of baseball, having
had many excellent teams in the
past.
Tech will have most of its let-
termen back from last year. This
will help them field a strong
team with possibly a chance for
supremacy in the conference.
Track Workouts
Scheduled Monday
With Basketball season com-
ing to a close tomorrow night,
Coach Jack Martin will begin
workouts for his Track team
Monday, March 2.
All boys who are interested in
participating in this spring sport
should report to Coach Martin in
the Union Gym at 3:00 Monday
evening.
George Hawkins, intramural
star who was ineligible last year,
is expected to help the Tech team
this year.
L. C. Choate and Sammy Car-
penter, sprinters, and Charles
Wales, high-jumper, will also be
valuable men on the Tech squad.
The Lone Star Conference
Track Meet will be held in Beau-
mont in May. The exact dates
have not been set as of date.
Coach Martin hopes to field a
team which will better last year’s
cellar squad. Several new mem-
bers are expected to help Martin
achieve his goal.
H. Eco. Defeats BSU
Coach Hilley has resumed his
intramural program in the ab-
sence of his assistant, Don Cole-
man, who is still under the influ-
ence of a case of flu. Home Eco-
nomics defeated BSU 35-14 last
Tuesday to advance to the play-
off.
Sul Ross Lobos
79-48 and 78-63
Conference Play for ’53
The Lamar Tech Cardinals
trounced the Sul Ross Lobos 79-
48 and 78-63 last Monday and
Tuesday respectively. The game
was played here before a sparse
but £nthuiastic crowd both nights.
These victories gave Tech a
four won and five lost record in
conference play and relegated Sul
Ross to the cellar. Sui Ross now
has a 0-9 record in conference.
Glenn Lewellan, second high
scorer in the LSC before these
two contests, was held to 11
points Monday night and 4 points
Tuesday night by Weldon Bond.
Previously he had averaged 22
points per game.
Walton Set Record
Ray Walton led Tech in scor-
ing in the first game with a total
of 26 points made on 10 field
goals and 6 gratis shots. This set
a new individual scoring record
for Lamar this season, abolishing
the old mark of 25 which was
held by Walton and Claude Gil-
son.
Verlon Bobbit and Gilson fol-
lowed with 16 points apiece in the
first game.
Tuesday night’s game was play-
ed at a more exciting pace with
the visitors staying close on the
Tail-Feathers of the Redbirds.
It was not until the latter
stages of the game that the Card-
inals pulled away from the
Lobos.
Five players on the Tech team
collected 13 or more points in the
second contest. Loyd Kilpatrick
led the way with 17 points but
was closely followed by Bond with
15. Gilson was next in line with
14 and Walton and Bobbit each
had 13.
DOPEY DICK’S COLUMN
By DICK GOERLICH
First of all, I must compliment
the Tech students on their sports-
manship attitude that they dis-
played Monday night. Keep up
the good work at all future Tech
sports activities.
Farrell Attaway, who recently
had an operation for correction of
a football injury, is expected back
on the campus next week. Farrell
had his stitches removed Wed-
nesday.
Dixie Harvey, Junior PE stu-
dent from Port Arthur, was in-
jured last Monday night in Port
Arthur. Dixie received no serious
injuries but will have to miss
modern dance for several days.—
Poor Girl!
Seems like Claude Gilson has
been on a traveling spree as of
late — always going * to Port
Arthur, Wonder Why?
Lamar’s Basketball team will
have three former Beaumont
High players when the season
rolls around next year. Earl
Touchstone, Bradley Barrow, and
Allen Louviere will report when
Coach Martin issues the call.
Touchstone and Barrow have
had junior college experience.
Both played two years at Kilgore.
Louviere has been in the service
and has not participated in bas-
ketball. These boys will add con-
siderably to our team next year.
Gabby Bates and Don Smith
have been helping with spring
practice’in Vidor. They said that
they were enjoying working with
the boys and that much valuable
experience was being gained.
After six years of playing bas-
ketball, Verlon Bobbit will lay
aside his Red and Blue jersey and
dream of old memories. Verlon
played when Tech was still a Jun-
ior College, during the transition
period and will complete two
years of senior college competi-
tion tomorrow night against St.
Edwards in Austin. He will not
be eligible to return next year.
Weldon Bond is a graduating
senior this year and he is in the
same position as Verlon with the
exception that he is eligible to
return next year.
Thp postponement of spring
football early this week until the
weather clears has met whole-
some approval from the football
players. Coach Higgins has said
that rough work will begin when
conditions improve so you better
rest while you can, Boys.
See you again next week with
some more dopey news, I hope.
Lamar Tech, entertaining
fourth place in conference stand-
ings, will invade the den of the
Sam Houston Bearkats in Hunts-
ville today at 8:00. This will end
conference play for both teams.
The Cardinals, with a 4-5 rec-
ord in conference, are favorites
over the Bearkats who sport a
2-7 record. Tech defeated Sam
Houston in Beaumont by a score
of 71-50.
• Lamar broke even in series
play with the Bearkats last year
winning 60-72 and losing 52-43.
Ray Walton, Tech’s outstand-
ing candidate for all-conference
honor’s, has been averaging over
14 points per game this season
and will seek to keep this mark
in tonight’s game.
Loyd Kilpatrick has apparently
recovered completely from his
injury which kept him out of ac-
tion for almost four weeks. He
Salty Jones led the losers in
both contests, scoring 13 Monday
and leading both teams Tuesday
night with 21 markers. He was
followed by Lewellan in the
first game with 11 and in the
second by Owens who collected
17.
This year’s results were exact-
ly opposite of last year’s when
Lamar lost two games to the
Lobos.
Next year Sul Ross will host
the Cardinals in two games
which will be played in Alpine.
Sizemore of Sul Ross fouled
out in both contests while Lamar
placed only one man on the bepch
by way of fouls, that being Bob-
bit in Tuesday’s game.

was high scorer for the Cards in
Tuesday’s game with Sul Ross
with 17 points.
Coach Martin has been pleased
with the way his charges have
performed in their last several
games. They have been playing
together as shown in Tuesday’s
game when all of the “starting
five” collected over 13 points.
These five boys will start the
contest tonight. They are in addi-
tion to Walton and Kilpatrick, \
Weldon Bond, Claude Gilson and
Verlon Bobbit. Bond and Bobbitt
will be playing their'next to last
basketball game for Tech. Bond
is graduating and Bobbitt will be
ineligible next year.
Ray Walton—one of the main-
stays of the Cardinal cagers. Ray
has been a thorn in the opponents
side both on scoring and re-
bounds.
