ional Indoor Meet and Saturday

SAN ANTONIO— Simple bas-
ketball logic tells one that the
home team always wins the big
one. Somebody forgot to relay
that bit of information to Jack
Martin and his Lamar Tech bas-
ketball team, however.
The Cardiac Cardinals, down
by as much as 11 points with
less than five minutes to play,
battled their way back to over-
take a seemingly bewildered
Trinity team by a 102-101 count
Saturday.
The overtime win vaulted the
Birds to a full game lead over the
Tigers in the Southland Confer-
ence title chase. More impres-
sive was the fact that Trinity’s
home winning streak of 19games
was snapped, leaving the San
Antonio school with the unen-
viable task of having to defeat
Lamar in McDonald Gym in order
to salvage a share of the crown.
Hie contest appeared all but
over when the Tigers Bill Stokes
layed one in to make it a 86-75
game with only five minutes to
play.
Added to this was the fact that
steady Jim Nicholson had three
fouls and with only 30 seconds
elapsed in the second half, he
drew number four.
The Mar tinmen, led by quick-
handed Kenny Haynes and Luke
Adams, began to chip away.
Adams and Kirby Collins hit
jumpers before Stokes countered
with a twisting lay-up.
Adams and Collins then hit
again but Stokes scored on a
tip-in to run the score to 90-83
with 3:14 left. Adams aHd David
Post scored and Stovall hit a
lay-up for Trinity to make it
a 92-88 game.
After David Post scored Stokes
committed his fifth foul, and La-
mar got the ball. The Cards
missed the shot and the Tigers
grabbed the ball, hoping to stall
away the final seconds.
Haynes, then swiped the ball
and drew a foul. With only
three seconds left, the Redbird
guard dropped in a pair to send
the game into overtime.
In the overtime Haynes scored
eight and Collins added a pair to
assure Big Red of its first win in
San Antonio in four years.
Cards Meet
9Cats Here
On Saturday
Coach Jack Martin’s cagers
will resume conference play this
weekend with a pair of SLC
contests. The Cardinals will
meet Abilene Christian Saturday
in Beaumont and Arlington on the
road Monday.
The Wildcats are led by Ron-
nie Hearne, currently the top
scorer in the Southland loop
with a 21.4 average per game.
Jeff Kimble, a 6-7 junior, who
has gotten little playing exper-
ience, is the man being counted
on inside. Kimble is averaging
9.5 rebounds per game for the
Cats.
Ronnie Massey, a man with an
excellent shooting eye from the
outside, is the second leading
scorer with a 12.8 average and
the top rebounder with a 10.4
norm.
The two with perhaps the best
all-around talent are Jerry Webb,
a 6-5 sophomore, and All-State
freshman Hoy Fitts. weDD is
quick, aggressive, and is rated
as a top jumper. Fitts lacks
experience, but has a sharp
shooting eye.
The Wildcats will match a
7-13 record against the Card-
inals 11-8 season mark.
The Rebels have suffered
through a long season, but they
are always capable of pulling
an upset. Last year, the con-
federates shattered Lamar’s
streak of 15 straight conquests.
Returning starters are 5-11
guard David Payne and 6-5 for-
ward Bob Peek. Junior col-
lege transfers Sherman Evans,
a 6-7 All-American and Dave
Evans add offensive punch to the
lineup.
Adams led all scorers with 29
points and led the Cardinals in
rebounding with 11. Haynes,
Post, and Tommy Dreessen all
added 15 points.
Stovall led the Tigers with 26
points and also hauled in 11 re-
bounds.
Lamar is now 4-0 in confer-
ence play while Trinity is 3-1.
Both teams are in action Sat-
urday with Lamar hosting Ab-
ilene Christian and the Tigers
meeting Texas-Arlington, an up-
set winner over Arkansas State
in Jonesboro Monday, at Earl
Sams Center.
Gents Edge
Cards 77-75
In Louisiana
Lamar’s Cardiac Cardinals,
after winning several close con-
tests in the two weeks since the
semester break, dropped a heart-
breaker Monday night as the
Centenary Gents edged the Cards
77-75 in Shreveport.
With the Cards trailing 77-75,
Jim Nicholson fielded a rebound
and hurled the ball down court
to Tommy Dreessen, who sank
a 25-foot set shot at the buzzer.
However, the official ruled that
the shot was made after the
final buzzer.
Lamar outshot the Gents from
the floor, hitting 30 of 66 at-
tempts for 45 per cent
Charity tosses proved to be
the difference, as Lamar hit
75 per cent of their trips to
the line, making 15 of 20 at-
tempts. The Gents converted 27
of 38 free shots.
Fred Zitar of Centenary led
sill scorers with 19 points. Lee
Mansell had 16 and Marshall
Crawford added 14.
Luke Adams led the Cardinals
with 16 markers. Nicholson bag-
ged 15 and Phil Endicott canned
10.
The Gents held a 46-44 re-
bounding advantage over the
Cardinals. Endicott and Nichol-
son pulled down 10 caroms each
and Adams cleared the boards
seven times.
HIGH ARCHING SHOT--Phil Endicott (12)
lofts a shot over the outstretched arm of
Trinity’s Reese Stovall (34). The Cardinals
rebounded from an 11-point deficit in the
second half to edge the Tigers 102-101 in
overtime in San Antonio Saturday. (Staff
