He tied a Lamar record of pass
interceptions by stealing a West
Texas State aerial in a 21-14
clash that Lamar won. It was
his seventh steal of the year,
tying David Webb's seven in
1961.
The Rams were known to be
interested i n David because of
his defensive ability. The 6-
foot, 2-inch, 193 pounder help-
ed Lamar clear many of its hur-
dles after transferring from the
University of Texas.
Another Southland Conference
draftee of the Los Angeles Rams
was Joe O'Brien, Arlington State
end.
Randy Johnson, Texas A&I
quarterback, already has signed
a contract with Atlanta of the
NFL. Denver of the American
Football League also chose him.
Johnson, who made All-Amer-
ica quarterback, guided the
Javelinas over Lamar 14-6
Vernon McManus, Lamar's 6-
foot, 210-pound All Conference
star has gained a linebacker
spot on the second team of the
1965 Little All-American foot-
ball unit. The Cardinal defen-
der was selected to the position
by the Associated Press.
McManus sparked Lamar to
two consecutive Southland Con-
ference championships by aver-
aging 20 tackles per game last
year and23 tackles per game
this year. In the battle with
Southwestern Louisiana the All-
American collected 33 tackles
and in the contest with the East
Central Oklahoma Tigers_ Mc-
Manus stopped 27 opponents.
Last year in the Pecan Bowl
against State College of Iowa,
M cM anus stopped 23 Panthers
with his jarring tackles, 12 of
them unassisted. This caused
Iowa coach Stan Sherrif to say,
"McManusshowed us time after
time the tremendous range he
has. The stastistics speak for
his ability."
After a 15-14 defeat by Lamar,
East Central coach Elvan George
commented, "M cManus virtu-
al ly stopped our weak side by
himself."
Thomas Smiley, the big and
powerful fullback of the Cardi-
nals, received honorable men-
tion from the Associated Press)
although not included among
the All-Americans.
Also named to the All-Ameri-
can team were two other South-
land Confer ence stars. They
were tackle Larry Cox of Abi-
lene Christian College and Dan
Summers of Arkansas State.

Arlington Puts 31-21 Upset
Over On Champion Cardinals
The A r 1 i ngton State Rebels
collected their second straight
upset by defeating the Lamar
Tech Cardinals 31-21 in Arling-
ton’s Memorial Stadium on
Nov. 20.
The Red birds closed out the
1965 grid s eason with a 6-4
ledger. Before the Arlington
game Lamar owned an admir-
able 3-0 conference standing.
The Rebs drew first blood in
the opening period on a 33-
yard field goal by Faust Parker.
The goal post-splitter collected
the three points after a 47-yard
drive.
Following a recovery of a
Lamar fumble, the Arlington
gridders again were guided by
the arm of Williams. On a
third down after a plunge up the
in i d d 1 e, an incorr.pleted pass
and a 15-yard penalty, Williams
shook off a pursuing Lamar
defender and hit Ronny Young
at the 15. The big end then
fought his way to paydirt for
the second Reb tally. Parker
again made good at the PAT
attempt and the Rebels forged
their lead to 17-0.
Undaunted, the Cardinals
paved their way from their own
38 to the Arlington four in six
plays. After a three yard-loss
and an i ncom pleted pass,
signal caller Phillip Primm
tossed to Steve Bailey who was
all alone in the left flat.
Bailey stepped into the paydirt
for the score. Mike Allman
footed the ball between the
crossbars to make the scoring at
a 17-7 tilt.
The Cards put seven more
points on t he ir side of the
scoreboard early in the second
half. Ten plays after Burt All-
man gathered in an Arlington
punt and returned it nine yards,
Lamar owned a first down at
theRebel23-yard line. Primm
took the snap from center,
rolled back, set himself and
hit Harold LaFitte in the end
zone for six points. Allman
again added the extra point
which made the scoring 17-14.
The Re bels were still blood
thirsty as they scored their last
touchdown with 2:44 left in the
final period.
From their 10-yard line, the
Cards rambled to the 44 by
two Tommy Currie aerials.
Then Primm returned into the
lineup and connected with
Johnny Fuller in the end flats.
Allman added the final point to
make the score 31-21.
