LT Must Win Final Games
To Tie HPC for LSC Title
Coach Martin and his Lamar Tech Cardinals will
have their backs to the wall tomorrow night, when
they face the Sul Ross Lobos in McDonald gym. The
Cardinals must win their remaining two games to be
insured of a tie with Howard Payne for the champion-
ship.
If the Cardinals should win their next two and
Howard Payne wins tomorrow night, but loses to
Lamar Monday night, it would be the second year in
a row the conference had a co-champion. Last year
both Lamar and Howard Payne finished with 13-1
records, and this year both would have 12-2 records,
provided the above situation is true. Whether Tech’’
wins or ties for the conference, it would be the third
straight title for Coach Martin and his Redbirds.
Last Monday night the Cardinals lost a heartbreaker.
to Stephen F. Austin, 84-83. After being behind as
much as 17 points in the first half, the Cardinals
battled back to take the lead on Don Heller's jump
shot with 32 seconds left.
In the final seconds, S.F.A.'s Keith Lowery missed
his first field goal attempt only to rebound and make
his second attempt to put SFA ahead with six seconds
left. T e ch had its last chance vanish when a long
pass was intercepted.
Don Heller lead the Cardinal attack with 27 points,
f o 11 o w ed by Richard Smith with 20 points. Lowery
lead the Lumberjacks with 24 points.
Lamar continues to lead the conference in season
standings with a 19-4 record. To date, the Cardinals
have scored a total of 1962 points or an 85.3 game
average, while opponents have scored 1661 points or
a 72.2 game average.
The Cardinals will close out the season on the
home court Monday night against Howard Payne.
Lamar Tech students should snow their gratitude to
the Cardinals for their fine effort this year in com-
piling perhaps the best record of any Cardinal team
by packing McDonald Gym to the tilt. The Cardinal
freshmen, coached by Billy Tubbs, will play the
Lamar-Exes Saturday night before the Sul Ross
battle; game time is 6 o'clock. The freshmen have
a 10-3 season record._

59th Consecutive Win
Win, lose or draw for the
conference title, Lamar is
awaiting a call from the
NCAA. Lamar is hopeful
of hosting the NCAA Area
4 Southwest regional
tournament this year, and
even if they are passed up
as hosts for the tourney,
are almost assured of get-
ting a bid with the top won-
loss record in the state.
It will be the second con-
s e c utive year that Lamar
will h ave participated in
the tournament. Last year
the Cardinals lost to the
eve ntual champion by one
point and captured the con-
solation title.
Lamar Tech's nationally
famous tennis team added
it's 59th consecutive match
win to their already long
list of honors last week,
downing Texas A&M in
Beaumont, 5-2.

for Lamar was Alfonso
Ochoa, 6-4, 6-1, over
Richard Barker; Tim
Heckler, 6-2, 6-4, over
Carroll Kell; and John
Maloney, 6-1, 6-0, over
Ricky Williams.
S a s sman downed Tech's
Jerry Johnson, 6-4, 2-6^

It is getting to be an old
story for the Lamar Tech
cagers, having their backs
to the wall as the season
goes into its final windup,
but that seems to be when
the Cardinals perform at
their best.
Only two games remain
on the regular season
slate, and tomorrow night
the Cards play Sul Ross
Slate in McDonald Gym and
then go for a tie in the
Lone Star Conference race
against, Howard Payne
Monday in Beaumont.
The Tech freshmen will
provide the preliminary
action in the Saturday tilt,
playing the Lamar Exes
in a 6 p.m. game. The two
I varsity games win oe un-
reeled at 8.
Tough Howard Payne now
stands unchallenged at the
top of the LSC standings
with a 11-1 mark, but they
must play Sam Houston
State Saturday in Kingsville
and Lamar Tech Monday.
Coach Jack Martin urges
Lamar fans not to give up
hope for a conference
championship. Sam Hous-
ton is one of the toughest
teams in the league and
capable of upsetting the
Yellow Jackets,
"Our Home crowd in the
next two games will be of
vital importance," said
Martin. "Our boys feel
like they're far, from being
out oi me race ana wm go
all out. I hope we see the
gym full both Saturday and
Monday n ight to help us
gain at least a tie for the
title."
No changes are expected
in the Lamar lineup for the
two games. Don Heller
(14.2) and Willie Williams
(9.7) will be atgurad,
Richard Smith (15.6)and
Larry Augsburger (12.5)
at forward, and Don Bryson
(12.6) at center.
Top reserves will be

forward Carrol Aulbaugh
(5.7) , f or wa rd Weldon
Higginbotham (5.6), and
guard Willie Wilson (1.8).
