Student counselors
needed for spring
pedagogy course
. The Department of Learning
Skills Programs is seeking appli-
cants for student-to-sludent aca-
demic counselors for the spring
PED 1201 course.
To be an adviser for the spring
1994 pedagogy course, an appli-
cant must be at least a sophomore,
have a GPA of 2.8 or better and
be selected to take Peer Adviser
Counselor Training (PED 2310).
Counselors will receive three
elective credits, a one-time lump
sum stipend upon completion,
leadership experience and
increased contact with key people
on campus, Dorothy Forestall,
director of Learning Skills, said.
The student-to-student aca-
demic counselors take on the role
of teaching and counseling the
class. Counselors can only receive
credit for teaching one semester.
|! Forristall said a student can
expect the counselors to conduct
an instructional program designed
to provide students with necessary
skills for improved performance in
college courses.
“The program is unique in that
it is designed to serve all students
— both the very bright, able learn-
ers and students with potential aca-
demic problems,” Forristall said.
Lamar began the College
Reading and Writing Skills course
to help students increase scholastic
success and improve study habits,
Forristall said. The program is in
its 17th year.
Selection of the student coun-
selors must be made before pre-
registration for spring classes
begins, Forristall said,
Students interested in the pro-
gram should contact Forristall in
118 Wimberly or call for an inter-
view at 880-8444.

Aurora Quintero looks into the plywood chapel built to protect the 1981 Chevrolet Berlinetta near Elsa, Texas, where people have Hocked to
see a silhouette of the Virgin Mary located just behind the driver-side rear wheel. David Mendoza, the car’s owner, and Quintero's brother,
have decided the appearance of the Virgin is a sign he should no longer drive the vehicle.
Police advise motorists L
on ‘lights out’ murders
The Houston Police Department
has issued an advisory to the peo-
ple in the Houston area.
A gang has been formed in the
southwest Houston area and initia-
tion into the gang is conditional to
performing a “lights out” murder.
The gang's initiation require-
ment is for “wannabe” gang mem-
bers to drive around at night with
the headlights off. When another
motorist flashes their lights as a
warning, the “wannabe” gang
members follow the innocent vic-
tim and shoot them.
Two families have already fallen
victim to this initiation ritual in St.
Louis and Chicago areas.
Police are warning citizens not
to flash car lights for anyone.

LAMAR ALIVE
Lamar Alive is a group of students working to provide fun,
social, educational events for Lamar University. As its name
indicates, we are trying to bring Lamar alive for all students.
To do this we need your help. Lamar Alive is organized in such
a manner that you need not make a yearlong commitment to be
involved. We need people to commit to the level that their
schedules will allow. This could be one event or one year. We
can only do this with your help.
