‘Texas Tice Testival
The 27th Annual Rice Festival is gearing up for
this year’s celebration full of music, carnival rides,
and, of course, rice.
Starting Saturday, the seven-day festival will run through Oct. 5. Each year the festival is held
in Winnie in honor of the rice harvest, and it features family entertainment with a down-home
country flair. All ages will delight in the country atmosphere, and the event features such enter-
tainment as a Gospel Singing Jubilee, a beauty contest, a BBQ and Fajita Cookoff and a singing
group Ricochet. Friday has been designated as youth day. The kids will stick to events, such as face
painting, an Ice Cream Eating Contest and Diaper Derby like white on rice. The first Saturday is
the epitomy of the fun-time activities beginning with the Grand Parade and a rice cook-
ing contest, craft show and antique car show.
Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for students and free for children under 6 years old
and senior citizens. Revenues support scholarships and agricultural projects.
For more information call 409-296-4404.

The Groves Chamber of Commerce and Tourist
Center is gearing up for the 27th Texas Pecan Festival. This year’s theme is “Coming to America,”
based on the Olympic games coming to America this past summer.
Starting Thursday, the carnival will open and the fun will begin. Food, crafts, carnival rides and live
entertainment wait for all in Groves. More pecans than anyone could dream of will be featured in
almost every event from the Pecan Pie Eating Contest to the Pecan Toss.
Concession stands and booths open Friday, and Saturday is packed
with events and live entertainment. Sunday has still more events and
entertainment until the festival closes that night.
There is no charge for admission. For more information call
409-962-3631.
