GETTING TO BE A JINGO.
Don M. Dickinson, Mr. Cleve-
land's former postmaster general,
disagrees with the president about
the Central American affair, and
goes for England red eyed.
Mr. Dickinson in a speech at
Detroit May i)th, used the follow-
ing language:
fiet us 1)0 just. Her unvarying
policy is first, and last, and al-
ways, to advance Uritish interests
and retain British supremacj-, to
retain and add to Brit sh wealth.
Her purposes are material. These
ends served, civilization, Christi-
anity, humanity, the general wel-
fare of the race, generosity and all
the virtues, may come and receive
encouragement and promotion at
her hands, but never at the ex
pense, never in the way of, aud
always subordinated to the mate-
rial policv I have stated. Who-
ever gets in the way of that is the
enemy of England, and will be so
treated, whether it b« the United
States, as a great commercial ri-
vtil who may l>e intrigued against
and encroached upon, aud even
crippled in some time of her dis-
tress or when off guard, or a tril>e
of black men in Africa, in the way
of her colonization schemes, who
may tie safely massacred with ma-
chine guns, as their spear-men
charge the invader with a bravery
not excelled by the knightly valor
of any age.
The corruption of continental
cabinets, the treatment of Napo-
lean after his surrender, the acqui-
sition and history of India, the
shameful support of the Turk in
Europe to this day. the treatment
of Greece in her struggle for inde-
pendence, the cruel massacre of

A reporter for the Herald met
Mr. Scott this afternoon, who
stated that the meeting was to
authorize the issuance of bonds
and provide for the road's con-
struction. Active construction on
the line was begun last Monday at
Daugheritv, 1. T.. by Braily Bros.
& McNair, contractors of Chicago,
who expect to have 3000 men at
work in a few days. The build-
ing will be pushed to Lehigh,
seventy-three miles, so as to com-
ply with the acts of congress by
having fifty miles completed bv
July.'50.
The line when completed to Le-
high. Mr. Scott stated, would be
operated independent of the Santa
Fe. but that that road would ac-
cept a great deal of the coal' out-
put, which would necessarily
make the Denison and Northern
an important feeder to the road.
The company intends to build
the entire line as soon as possible.
This afternoon's meeting, while to
authorize bonds to the extent of
:?1,.'500.000, will in no wise retard
the construction from Daugheity
to Lehigh, as no bonds will be
placed or deed of trust given until
it is completed.—Denison Herald.

Afghan triln's, the occupation of,
Egypt, the ruthless slaughter of!
blacks in Africa, the unspeakable |
treatment of Ireland and the j
chivalry of the mighty toward the
weak as exemplified in Venezuela
and Nicaragua, are a few of
subjects to l>e treated of and cl
acterized by the fair historian of j
the next century, when he shiill
set down the facts of this one. and
record the impartial judgment of:
enlightened men upon them.
But they are subjects worth con- |
sidering now, because we should I
study well the conditions sur- !
rounding our future, and should
know something of the character |
and purposes, and policies of that
power, which the telegraph and '
greyhounds of the sea (with and j
without guns, armored and un- !
armored) have made our near]
neighbor. A neighbor who has |
recently completed on the island
of St. Lucia, in the West Indies, I
one of the strongest fortresses in J
the world, and has l>een careful I
not to metion it nor permit it to i
l»e described in print.
Against what power of the old !
world is this fortification to de- |
fend! What fleet is it supposed
will rendezvous under its gnns, j
and against what nation is that j
tleet to lie sent ?
The fortress of Nassau, off the I
Atlantic sealward. has l>een re-1
cently strengthened aud greatly
added to, and yet it served very
well dining our war to protect the
violators of the blockade, and the
ships of war that preyed upon our
commerce found refuge under its
guns.
There is a fortification of great
stiength at Halifax, on our north-
east boader, recently addeil to an 1 |
greatly strengthened.
On our northwestern border, j
across the narrow strait which j
separates Vancouver from the
state of Washington, immense |
sums of mony have been expended i
to complete and equip a fort at
Esquimault.
Mr. Dickinson certainly uses !
strong language, and there is no
doubt that we will have to keep
an eye on England. Our south- '
em neighbors have been marked
by her as legitimate plunder, and
sooner or later we must make her
keep within bounds. But we can
doit. There seems to us no call
now on President Cleveland to be
hasty. He managed the Cariuto
affair with prudence and skill,
and 110 doubt if occasion arises lie
will be bold and firm. At any
rate we will not condemn his for-
eigjypolicy in advance.
HOW IT LOOKS TO HIM
The Dallas News propounded a
number of quotations to each!
member of the state press associ- j
ation. The fourth question wv.s
what does Texas most need to
keep her to the front. Our neigh- j
bor. Cadwell, of the Signal an-1
swered it as follows:
4. Manufacturers, greater di-
versity of crops, less sectional
hatred and prejudice, broader and
higher educational standards, the
stars and stripes floating upon j
every school building aud public '
building in Texas.
We see no trace of the Omaha I
platform in this answer, and in j
tact nothing wrong in the whole j
answer unless there be an iusinu-1
ation that we are prejudiced I
against other sections of t..e conn-:
try, and that we are disloyal to j
the government by his wanting!
the stars and stripes to be floating j
from every school house, court j
house and jail in the state. That
part was a burst ot spread ea^lcj
patriotism that has no particular
significance except that it shows
the author to l>elong to that po-
litical race that in the recent past I
attempted to make capital in the!
north by accusing the people here ;
of being hostile to the government, j

The directors of the Denison

at the State Hotel this evening to j
provide for the construction of the
entire line. Vice President Childs
and General Solicitor W. J. Scott
of Kansas City arrived on M., K.

has been at Dangherty, I. T., for
several days past, was expected
to arrive via Gainesville this af-
