More About the Crew* Matter.
There was considerable stir in
the city over the removal of Crews
from our jail. Many good people
were censuring the sheriff for re-
moving him secretly and in such
haste.
The Hesperian force has been
hunting up the matter aud trying
to get at the bottom facts. The
manner in which the removal was
brought about indicates that the
officers had knowledge of some at-
tempts at mob violence. The
sheriff, if he had any such knowl-
edge, keeps it to himself. When
asked alx>ut it he said he removed
him by an order of the court.
Still we do believe the action
would have been taken had not
either the judge or the sheriff been
apprehensive of trouble.
Crews was taken to the court
house about dark by Sheriff Ware
and Deputy Womack. Clerk
kicked by a j Lilly and Attorneys Garrett and
Green were present Court was
quietly opened, no lights were
seen, no windows were raised and
no one except those present knew
what was going on.
The judge entered the following
order in each of the two cases:
It is the order of the court that
defendant, J. Q. A. Crews, who
has l>een adjudged to be guilty of
murder in the first degree, and
whose punishment has been assess-
ed by the verdict of the jury at
confinemnt for life in the peniten-
tiary-, be conveyed by the sheriff
of Cooke county, Texas, imme-
diately to the county jail of Tar-
rant county, in the city of Fort
Worth, Texas, to l>e there safely
kept by the sheriff of said Tarrant
county and by him delivered to
the superintendent of the peniten-
tiaries of the state of Texas or
other persons legally authorized
to receive such convicts, and the
said J. Q. A. Crews shall l>e con-
lined in said penitentiaries during
his life, in accordance with the
powers of the law governing the
penitentiaries of said state.
It was in obedience to this or-
der that the sheriff took Crews to
Fort Worth.
It is no more than justice to
Sheriff Ware to say that it was his
duty if he thought there was any
danger to take such precautions
as were necessary to insure the
safety of his prisoners.
Sheriff Ware felt as much out-
raged at the verdict of the jury as
anybody, aud expressed himself
that it was unfortunate for the
cause of law and order when they
failed to break his neck. But he
is sworn to protect his prisoners
against a mob, and he would do it
though he lost every vote in the
county.
No one could have blamed the
relatives of Crews' victims had
they taken his life after the juries
had failed to put an adequate pun-
ishment upon him. But the sher-
iff could not enter into this.
We do not know that they con-
templated doing any such thing.
In fact some of them told us noth-
ing of the kind was thought of.
The case had l>een submitted to
the juries of the county. They
had said what should be done with
him and he had to be taken to the
penitentiary. He will be brought
back again for trial at the next
term of the court, and we yet have
faith that twelve men can be found
with backbone enough to give him
the punishment he deserves.
