woolen manufacturers and they
have agreed to it, and it is claimed
virtually all woolen manufacturers
signed the petition.
Several prominent Rhode Island
manufacturers were in Washington
last week and urged the committee
to adopt this schedule. It is
alleged the committee was favor-
ably impressed with the proposi-
tion for a settlement of the wool
tariff. Democratic manufacturers
say they would start their mills
up immediately and enable manu-
facturers to make preparations for
reductions in the tariff in a way
that would not disturb trade seri-

the defense.
Washiugton, May 7.—The de-
fense had its inning today in the
police trial, where Coxey, Browne
and Jones are on trial. From a
statement of Attorney Hyman for
the defense it was learned that the
defense will be largely based on
the brutality of the police in club-
bing citizens. It will be shown
that Coxey did not walk on the
grass and Brown had been driven

The following is told by Boniface De
Wilt of the Rigg* House:
• Dr. Taluiage was preaching at Belle-
ville, N. J., aome yeara ago, and one
week he made up his mind to go into the
pulpit the next Sunday without notes or
memoranda of what he wm going to aay.
He memorized hi« sermon and believed
he had it completely at his tongue's end.
So Sunday night he went to the charcb
pretty well fortified with confidence.
"In those days in that section of Jer
Bey churches and hotels and many pri
vate residences were equipped with pri
vate gas machines, and the church where
Taim age was to hold forth had one too.
When be got into the pulpit after con
ducting the preliminary services all
right, he gave out his text. Then he was
horrified to find that he couldn't think of
a thing to aay. He repeated the text a
second time, and yet his ideas failed to
come. He was in agony and began
slowly and impressively to annonnce his
text a third time. As he reached the
last word and the perspiration of dread
and shame was beginning to start, the
gas went out and plunged the place into
utter darkness. There was no other
means for lighting the edifice, sod when
it was announced that the gas machine
had broken down hopelessly Dr. Tal
mage pronounced the benediction, and
have heard him say that he never did so
before or since with greater fervor or
thankfulness ot spirit"—Washington
Post.
