Texas.
John Kirkpatrick, late a mer-
chant of Hamilton, was arrested
at San Angelo, charged with ob
stmcting the United §tates mar-
shal in the execution of a writ of
attachment. Kirkpatrick's store
and stock of goods were levied
on at the instance of Bernheim,
Bower & Co., and sold out. Kirk-
patrick then went to San Angelo
to look after his interests, with
the above result.
Cattlemen in Texas, profiting by
dear experience resulting from
the late disastrous drouth, have
organized an association with a
common fund for the purpose of
sinking wells at regular intervals
in the vast pastures lying east of
the Rio Grande. This undertak-
ing is gigantic, but the value of
such wells can be estimated at
millions of dollars. A dozen wells
have been dug and good water
found at an average depth offorty
feet. As the diggers get further
west it is calculated that the arte-
sian wells will have to be sunk.
Leading cattle and sheep men re-
gard it as only a question of a
few years before the great Hocks
and herds in Presidio and far west-
ern Texas will be watered at arte-
sian wells..
The railroad company is boring
an artesian well at Pecos City, and
will go 3,000 feet if necessary, but
.think water will lie obtained at
500 feet.
A correspondent from Balliu-
ger writes: Notwithstanding this
being Sunday, business is carried
on as any other day of the week,
the saloons and gambling houses
being the most prominent places.
Many seem to be weak and weary
from indulgingtoo much in fire-wa-
ter. Three sermons were preach-
ed to-day to large and attentive
audiences. Eev. Mr. Zivly, of
San Angelo, is here to give the
young city a religious training,
and ere long it will cease to be
the rendezvous of the gambler,
and the squeaking sounds of the
liddle on Sunday morning will give
way to the ringing of the church
bell.
New Mexico.
The Chiracahna mountains are
all afire.
The Demuig Headlight says:
"This hot weather is bringing to
the surface all the accumulated
and concentrated stink of China-
town. The smell on the half block
between Woodburn's shop and
Crean's store is enough to sprout
cholera. It ought to bo disin-
fected."
Extensive fires have been rag-
ing in the Sierra Madre mountains
south of Cloverdale for severai
days past, and it is said the fire
spreads over a scope of country
seventy-five miles square.
A station of the signal service
corps has been located at Dom-
ing. All military business is to be
telegraphed to the peak at Fort
Cummiugs, and from there by the
heliograph to troop D camp at
Lockhart's ranch, Separ, Lake
Valley and beyond.
The laying of the corner stone
of the new Bernalillo county court
house takes place at Albuquerque
on the 5th,
The Albuquerque Indian school
has incorporated with a capital
stock of $1.00,000. Its directors
are James A. Menaul, Granville
H. Boad, Joseph H. Loveland,
Frederick E. McKinley and iticb
ard H. D. Bujan.
The Albuquerque Fair associa-
tion is not losing any time in get-
ting everything in shape for the
oomiag exposition, The race track
is being ditched on the inside to
carry off all surface water so that
should it rain during tie fair the
track will remain in good condi-
tion and the races can go on. Mr.
Wheelock reports that the upper
country is alive regarding the ex-
position, and that the delegations
from there will be larger than
heretofore.
J. A. La Rue writes from Lin-
coln county that abundant late
rains there have placed the range
in excellent shape.
A couple of confidence chaps,
says the Deming Headlight, came
up from El.Paso this morning and
succeded iu playing a greenhorn
for fifteen dollars. The victim
went on to the Pacific, but the
thieves are here yet. Wouldn't it
relieve the present dull monotony
to take these chaps out into the
mesquit and have some fun with
them ?
