Broke the Record.
New York, Aug. 16.—Associ-
ate Justice Stephen Field of the
supreme court of the United
States snpreme court will to lay
break the record for continuous
service on the supreme bench,
having served thirty-four years,
five months and six days, or one
day longer than former Chief
Justice John Marshall, whose
record of service has hitherto
been the longest of all the justices
sincc the establishment of the
national tribunal ef last resort.
It has been generally under-
stood that Justice Field would re-
tire from the bench when his
length of service exceeded that of
former Chief Justice Marshall. It
is probable that his seat on the
bench will become vacant in the
near future and upon his retire
ment Attorney General McKenua,
according to the present under
standing, will succeed him.
The vacancy in the attorney
ship, it is expected, will then be
filled by Judge Goff of Virginia.

Kansas City, Mo., has broken
her record in the matter of wheat
receipts, the total for the three
weeks during which the new crop
has been under way having
amounted to 6097 cars, or about
4,000,000 bushels; and there are
more than 12,000 carloads of
wheat piled np in the railway
yards of that city. Almost
big a "boom" as the great harvest
itself is the rapidity with which
it is being rnshed to market, since
it gives the railways employment
for rolling stock, much of which
would otherwise be Idle at this
time, and gives the farmers their
money so early that the effect of
its expenditure will certainly be
shown in the Increased yolnme of
fall trade and in the general wip-
ing oat of debts.
