Chief concerns
Being safe
means more fun
All of us who own property
or live in Port Aransas know
our homes are summer destina-
tions for our friends and family
who want to come to the beach
for their vacations. We all want
to share our good fortune and
make lasting memories with
them.
My trophy wife and I have
already hosted family for 14
days this summer and it is
only the first of June. I am not
complaining because I love
to have company, especially
when it is family. I got to meet
my two-month-old grandson
for the first time during one of
those visits. As a father I enjoy
sharing the love of the beach
with my kids, playing in the surf
with them, and watching their
faces light up when they hook
a big fish.
Living near the beach we
have learned to appreciate not
only its beauty and recreation-
al value, but we also have an
appreciation for the potential
perils of living and playing so
close to the water. The police
department investigated the
first drowning of the year last
week and unfortunately it prob-
ably won’t be the last.
Most of our guests are so
overwhelmed with the beauty

or our island and the joys of
playing in and near the water
that they may not be aware of
or think about the potential
dangers that lie beyond our
shores. It is our obligation as
hosts to educate our guests
about water safety.
Let’s start with the basics. We
should never go into the water
by ourselves: Always swim with
a buddy. Inexperienced swim-
mers should stay in shallow
water and swim near the life-
guard stands. Brightly colored
clothing is easier to see then
blue or green swimwear.
The surf can wear you down
quickly; everyone who swims in
the Gulf should have access to a
flotation device such as a throw
ring, surfboard, bodyboard, or
a good inflatable mat. Inflatable
pool toys are not designed to be
used as life saving equipment,
but they are better than noth-
ing. Small children and inexpe-
rienced swimmers should wear
U.S. Coast Guard approved life
vests when they are in the surf
or on a boat. Take a break when
you start to get tired.
All swimmers should be
aware of the potential for rip
currents. Swimmers who find
themselves being pulled away
from the shore by the current
need to swim parallel to the
beach until they are no longer
being pulled out.
Know where you are at all
times. Use the green numeric
markers on the dunes as a
landmark. Establish boundar-
ies for your children; don’t use
vehicles or other objects that
may move during your stay. If
someone in your group goes
missing, call 911 immediately,
even before you start looking
for them. Small children can
wonder more than a mile away
from your location in less than
20 minutes.
Let’s enjoy sharing our good
fortune with our family and
friends but let’s also make sure
that their memories are good
ones and not tainted by a pre-
ventable tragedy.
