those birds winter at the nearby Aransas
Wildlife Refuge. Conservationists and
birders from all over the nation visit the
cranes and the festival each year. The fes-
tival, which begins today, Thursday, Feb.
25, and continues through Sunday, Feb.

Birds of a feather
Sam: Why are you always
standing on one leg, Joe?
Joe: I’m resting the other one.
Sam: That’s ridiculous.
Joe: What do you mean?
Sam: The leg you’re standing
on is just going to get more tired,
because it’s got to hold up all
your weight by itself.
Joe: Are you saying I’m fat?
Sam: Well, now that you men-
tion it ...
Joe: Hey, it’s been a long winter,
pal. Anyway, you could spruce
up your personal appearance
a little bit yourself, you know.
You’re all hunched over.
Sam: Hey, you are, too.
Joe: By golly, you’re right We
gotta straighten up. The Whoop-
ing Crane Festival is this week-
end here in Port Aransas.
Sam: Hey, you’re right! We got-
ta look good for the cameras.
Where’s my comb?

egrets were photographed Sun-
day, Feb. 21, at the Wetlands
Education Center at the Uni-
versity of Texas Marine Science
Institute in Port Aransas. They
assured the photographer they
would be available for interviews
during the Whooping Crane

Interim City Manager Dave Parsons told
the city council on Thursday, Feb. 18.
Some 114 people applied for the posi-
tion, said Pat Garrett, who is executive as-
sistant to the city manager and a member
of the search committee. Fifty-nine of the
applicants had backgrounds that met the
basic criteria for the office, Garrett said.
Each member of the search committee
created his or her own list of a best 10-
or-so candidates.
Besides Garrett, the search committee
is made up of Parsons, Finance Director
Darla Honea, City Secretary Esther Ar-
