Sales by the seashore?
City to ponder question at meeting tonight
Dan Parker
Reporter
The Port Aransas City Coun-
cil is set to once again consider
whether the city should allow
itself the power to permit ad-
ditional commercial activity
on the beach, including sales
of food and beverages.
Recent unscientific surveys
on the Facebook pages of the
South Jetty and a South Jetty
reporter prompted numerous
responses opposing the idea
of food and drink sales on the
beach. A few wrote that they’d
welcome the activity, and
still others expressed mixed
feelings.
The council is scheduled to
meet at 5 p.m. today, Thursday,
July 21, at council chambers
in city hall, 710 W. Ave. A.
Council members will hear
public comment on the beach
vending issue and other topics
on the council agenda.
To be precise, the issue
before the council isn’t ac-
tually whether to allow ad-
ditional commercial activ-
ity, but whether to approve
changes to the city’s Coastal

Management Plan. The con-
nection is this: If the council
approves proposed changes to
the document’s wording, and
if the Texas General Land Of-
fice approves the changes, the
city then would be allowed to
draw up a proposed ordinance
to create a program to initiate
and regulate sales.
Any proposed ordinance
would have to go through
votes by the council in three
separate meetings, all of which
would include opportunities
for public input.

eventually are approved, the

Leadership at MSI changes
Director Fuiman to resign, take Holfs place at FAML
Dan Parker
Reporter
Leadership changes are taking place
at the University of Texas Marine Sci-
ence Institute and the Fisheries and
Mariculture Laboratory (FAML), a
part of the institute.
Joan Holt is planning to retire as
director of FAML. Lee Fuiman said he
plans to resign as director of the insti-
tute and move into Holt’s position.
Fuiman, 57, said details of the tim-
ing of the move haven’t been solidified,
but he believes his resignation will be
effective Aug. 31. He has been director
for seven years.
Holt, 70, said she plans to leave in
late August. She said she originally
retired in August last year, but she
soon went back to work at FAML,
part-time, until her replacement could
be found.

Holt was hired as a research asso-
ciate at the Marine Science Institute
in 1977 and then moved on to the

two years later.
Holt’s specialty has to do with larval
fish biology and culture. Her first job
involved raising red drum larvae. It

$1.99 hike for garbage pickup on table
Trash talk
Dan Parker
Reporter
Get ready for some trash talk.
The Port Aransas City Council will con-
sider raising garbage pickup rates when it
meets today, Thursday, July 21. The meeting
begins at 5 p.m. at council chambers in city
hall, 710 W. Ave. A.
Like all regular council meetings, this
one will offer citizens the opportunity to
publicly address the council on most any
city issue.
City staff is proposing a $ 1.99 increase to
all citizens’ monthly bills. That would make
the rate $29.47 before tax and $31.90 after
tax for most citizens, according to a report
staff prepared for council members.
The increase would make senior citizens’
bills $27.62 before tax and $29.90 after tax.
Allied Waste is the city’s garbage pickup
contractor.
“Allied Waste has increased the fees that
are bein^ charged to the city for sanitation
services, the report said. “At the current
rate the city is charging the citizens, the
sanitation fund is not sustainable.”
The city hasn’t increased rates since
2008.
News of the proposed rate increase was
met with grumbling by several citizens
chiming in on the Facebook pages of the
South Jetty and a South Jetty reporter.
Charlette Nolte Hagedorn of Port Aran-
sas wrote that she opposed the rate increase.
The bills already are too high, she said.
“They have limited what and how much
we can dispose of and now they want more
$,” Hagedorn wrote. “I don’t think so.”
Switching to once-a-week pickups would
save the city money, but Mayor Keith
McMullin said in a recent interview that
he didn’t expect the council to seriously
entertain that idea, because there doesn’t
appear to be citizen support for it.
If the council approves a hike this week,
the new rate will go into effect with the bills
that will be sent out Sept. 1. Those bills will
cover sanitation services for the period of
July 15 to Aug. 14.
