Cruising the beach
Folks cruise the beach in Pod Aransas in golf cads, cars and trucks on Saturday, July 16.
Food and beverage sales could become a pad of this scene in the future if the Pod Aransas
City Council chooses to amend the town’s Coastal Management Plan today, Thursday, July
21. The council meets at 5 p.m. at council chambers in city hall, 710 W. Ave. A.
Beach vending on agenda
Continued from Page 1A
process of getting all govern-
mental ducks in a row will
take so long that it will be
probably at least a year before
actual exchanges of money for,
say, hotdogs and sodas, could
take place in Port Aransas city
sands.
Still, the meeting today
could be an important step in
the process. This will be the
third and final reading of the
measure to propose changes to
the Coastal Management Plan.
The council must vote at three
separate meetings to give final
approval to such a thing.
At the second reading, on
June 16, the council voted 4-
3 to make the amendments.
Voting yes were Mayor Keith
McMullin and councilmen
Keith Donley, Steve Lanoux
and John Price. Council mem-
bers Glenda Balentine, Ed-
win Myers and Charles Bujan
voted no.
Any commercial changes
the city might make on the
beach wont take place between
the south jetty and a point just
south of Lantana Drive. That
part of the beach is owned
by Nueces County. The city
owns the portion of the beach
stretching from that point near
Lantana Drive south to the city
limits. That’s where changes
might take place.
The Coastal Management
Plan currently allows only one
vendor on the beach, and that
vendor must be the type that
rents things like beach chairs
and floats, according to city
rules. It also must sell beach
parking permits and pack up
and move off the beach at the
end of each day.
Sale on
Saturday
Like bargains? Then you
may want to be first in line
at a rummage sale put on by
the Port Aransas High School
cheerleaders.
The team will hold the sale
from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sat-
urday, July 30, in the foyer of
the Doyle Marek Gym at Port
Aransas High School, 100 S.
Station St.
Donations of items for the
sale are being sought. To make
a donation, contact Sherri Bu-
jan at (361) 549-9878.
According to co-sponsors
Bujan and Nona Hendricks,
the team is raising money to
buy new uniforms.
Gulfside Beach Rentals has
that contract with the city. It
is allowed to operate on the
beach at Avenue G, Sandcastle
Drive and Access Road 1A.
The Facebook surveys
turned up a total of 20 people
saying no to the idea of allow-
ing food and drink vendors on
the beach. Some wrote that
beach vendors would pose
unfair competition with busi-
nesses in town.
Some, like Greg Paul Walk-
er, wrote that more business
on the beach could mean
more litter.
“Leave it alone!” wrote
Walker, an Oklahoma City
resident who regularly visits
Port Aransas with his family.
“One of the beauties of Port
A beach is that you can pack
everything in your car and
park right on the beach. You
don’t need vendors. Port A
(stores and fast food) is close
enough...”
Some writers wrote that
Port Aransas should stay true
to its identity.
“Please don’t turn Port A
beaches into South Padre!!”
wrote Stacy Hartley Beatty,
of Dallas. “The horrible food
trucks with the loud speakers
and music are the worst!”
Several Port Aransas resi-
dents also stated their op-
position to allowing more
commercial activity on the
beach.
Only five people respond-
ing to the Facebook surveys
expressed support for permit-
ting food and drink vendors.
“I think there should be
some kind of place to buy
drinks and food on the beach,”
wrote Annette Schwenk of
Port Aransas. “Maybe not the
whole beach, but at least a des-
ignated area would be nice.”
City staff has said that, if
the CMP is changed, and if
the council decides it wants
an ordinance to create a beach
sales program, staff would
propose that a limited num-
ber of vendors be allowed.
As staff members envision it,
vendors would be required to
demonstrate that they run an
attractive business in order to
get a contract with the city,
and they would have to stay on
designated spots on the beach
before packing up and leaving
at the end of each day.
Some favoring the change
to the Coastal Management
Plan have argued that the city
could bring in a new revenue
stream by charging fees to the
businesses permitted to locate
on the beach.
