Easter egg
hunt slated
The Port Aransas Rotary
Club and the Easter Bunny
will co-host the annual Eas-
ter egg hunt.
Children up to 10 years old
are invited to hunt for eggs
and prizes.
The hunt will take place in
Community Park, 700 Clark
Parkway, off Ross Avenue.
It will start promptly at 2
p.m., on Sunday, April 24. It
is important to be on time,
because the hunt usually
does not last more than a few
minutes.
The Easter Bunny will be
there to supervise the hunt.
Youngsters will hunt for
plastic Easter eggs filled
with candy and may have
their pictures taken with
the Easter Bunny during the
event, according to Barbara
Smith, chairman of this years
event.

PAISD school trustees silent on budget cuts
Phil Reynolds
Staff writer
Other school districts in
Texas may be announcing
budget cuts and staff layoffs,
but six of the seven Port Aran-
sas ISD school trustees say
they’re comfortable with not
discussing exactly how the
district will live with an antici-
pated state budget shortage.
Legislators in Austin are
wrestling with what State
Comptroller Susan Combs
has said is a $27 billion deficit
in the states revenue for the
biennium that will start Aug.
31. School superintendents
have said they’re apprehensive
about how much of that deficit
public education must absorb,
and where they’ll come up
with the money.
In Port Aransas, Superin-
tendent Dr. Sharon Doughty
has said the district has no
plans to lay off classroom
teachers, and in fact the
school board has already
renewed contracts for all its
certified - that is, teaching
- employees.
At the board’s April 14
meeting, the South Jetty
polled trustees on their feel-
ings about being in the minor-
ity about announcing cuts — a
word Doughty said she avoids

Which way will it go?
11th Street residents weigh in on bond issue
Editor’s note: Port Aran-
sas voters will go to the polls
May 14 to decide whether to
approve a proposed $6.4 mil-
lion bond package to pay for
extensive road improvements
along nearly two miles of 11th
Street, from Avenue G to Beach
Access Road 1A. In this story,
11th Street area residents and
merchants sound off on the
issue.

Which way to go on 11th
Street?
The answer depends upon
whom you ask.
Charles Rhea, owner of
Surfside RV and Resort, in
the 1800 block df 11th Street,
said he’ll vote in favor of the
bond issue.
“I want this street to be
better-operative for the guests
that come to the community
and for residents,” Rhea said.

Motorists drive past a group of cyclists on 11th Street on Friday, April 15. If Port Aransas
; voters approve a $6.4 million bond package next month, 11th Street will be expanded to be
i three lanes wide, from Avenue G to Beach Access Road 1 A. A sidewalk and bike trail also
would be built. Construction of underground drainage would be part of the deal, too.
B u t
Rhea
said he
wants the
roadwork
done fast,
and he’s
hoping
that the
city won’t
raise the
speed
limit after
the thor-
oughfare ~
becomes more drivable. The
speed limit is 30 mph.
City staff and the city coun-
cil have agreed that, if the
bond passes, the bumpy two-
lane road would be expanded
to include a center turn lane,
and the full length of 11th
would get a brand-new base
and pavement.
Also part of the deal would
be construction of a sidewalk
down one side of the road and
a concrete bike path down
the other side. Underground
drainage and new gas lines
would be installed throughout
the length of the street.
A new water main also
likely would be installed along
the street if the roadwork takes
place, but the water line work
would be funded separately
from the bond.
Rhea said he believes most
of his park’s guests would sup-
port passage of the bond.

day to get to the beach, said
he likes the idea of a sidewalk.
