Port Aransas South Jetty
Rotary Club to post flags
In honor of Veterans’ Day, Wednes-
day, Nov. 11, the Port Aransas Rotary
Club will again post 125 flags around
the community at homes and businesses
of subscribers to its flag fundraiser
program.
The project, spearheaded by Rotarian
and veteran Francis Stokes, helps fund
Rotary projects and scholarships for the
community throughout the year.
For a $60 annual fee, Rotary Club
members will come to your home or
business, drill a hole in the yard, install
a 10-foot flag pole topped with a 3-by-
5-foot American flag and let it fly all
day. When the day is over, Rotarians
will remove the flag and pole, then
bring it all back the next holiday. Flags
and poles remain the property of the
Rotary Club.
Flags are posted on six holidays;
Veteran’s Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day,
Presidents’ Day, Independence Day and
Patriot’s Day (Sept. 11).
Rotary members will be at the Fam-
ily Center IGA parking lot tomorrow,
Friday, Nov. 6, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for
a food drive, and will also sell subscrip-
tions to the flag program.
Flags may be ordered by mail by send-
ing checks to: Port Aransas Rotary Club,
P.O. Box 674, Port Aransas, TX, 78373.
Include your name, physical addresses,
mailing addresses, phone numbers (in-
cluding an alternate phone number) and
a check for $60 made payable to the Port
Aransas Rotary Club.
For more information call Stokes
at 749-5264, ext. 7400.

GED registration begins Friday
If you want to earn a GED, tomorrow,
Friday, Nov. 6, is the day to register.
The Adult Education and Literacy
program at the Community Presby-
terian Church, 113 S. Alister St., will
begin accepting applications for a new
General Education Development and
Adult Literacy program beginning in
mid-November.
The GED program aims to provide
adults who were unable to finish high
school with the tools to obtain their
GED certification. GED certification is
an alternative equivalent to a high school
diploma.
Adult literacy classes will be offered
concurrently as part of the program.
Instruction will be tailored to meet the
skill level of each individual.
The classes are free at this time, but as
materials and computerized testing and
evaluation is acquired, some nominal
fees may be charged in the future. The
test, administered at Del Mar College in
Corpus Christi, costs approximately $70.
Sponsors are sought to help students pay
for the test.
The previous GED program, founded
by Toni Somers in 2005, closed in May of
2008 with Somers’ retirement. The Com-
munity Presbyterian Church sponsored
that program as well.
The GED diploma is recognized by 98
percent of colleges and universities, and
97 percent of employers, including the
United States Armed Forces.
Contact the church office at 749-5319
or e-mail program coordinator Harry
Shaw, at GEDPortA@gmail.com to reg-
ister for an initial screening.
“Don’t miss out on this powerful
second chance to improve your life!”
Shaw said.
For information about sponsoring a
GED student, contact the church office
or e-mail Shaw for details.
The Port Aransas Museum has sched-
uled a 2010 Historical Lecture Series,
with plans for it to be an annual winter
series.
The inaugural lecture will be on
Monday, Nov. 9.
Wine and cheese will be served at the
museum at 7 p.m. and the presentation
will begin at 8 p.m .in the Community
Center, 408 N. Alister St.
The presentation on the 1919 storm
by Jim Moloney will be a fitting end to
the 2009 hurricane season.
The 1919 storm destroyed much of
Port Aransas, and in many cases rear-
ranged buildings that remained.
A history of the storm has not
been published until now. Murphy
Givens, Caller-Times columnist, has
collected the tales of survivors and
newspaper accounts of the time and
woven them into a gripping narrative
of death and survival.
Moloney organized photographs from
the aftermath of the hurricane to give an
understanding of the destruction and the
clean-up task facing the battered city.
Moloney, a partner in Energy Gas
Compression and collector of post-
cards and other paper items of Corpus
Christi history, will present a summary
of the new book, “1919 - The Storm,”
which will include a slide show of the
devastation.
The book will be available for pur-
chase at the presentation.
For more information call Betty
Bundy, 749-3406.
