July sales take a dip
Sales tax returns were down in Port
Aransas for September, but not as far
down as the state average.
Texas Comptroller Susan Combs said
the state collected $1.75 billion in sales
tax in September, down 12.5 percent
compared to a year ago.
“Monthly sales tax collections con-
tinue to decline as most major sectors
of the economy, including oil and gas,
construction and retail trade, continue
to struggle,” Combs said. Collections
for Texas cities was down 12.2 percent
compared to last year.
In Port Aransas, the allocation was
down 3.68 percent for September, and
down 0.38 for the year to date. That
means the city banked $174,134.17
compared to September 2008 when the
check was for $180,789.61.
The state and local sales tax figures
represent sales that occurred in July.
See chart for the change in allocations
for area cities as well as cities on the
southern and northern Texas coast, and
for San Antonio, where many regular
visitors to Port Aransas and second ho-
meowners here reside.
