THE BIBLE
BY ROGER TURNER
“And when he had apprehended him, he put him in
prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of sol-
diers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him
forth to the people” (Acts 12:4).
Peter stated that we are to speak as the oracles
of God. (1 Peter 4:11). Paul wrote that we are to
“rightly divide the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15)
The church of Christ “speaks where the Bible
speaks, and is silent where it is silent.” To properly
understand the Bible, sometimes it is necessary for
us to take a good look at the use of words, since
words are the vehicles that convey ideas and teachings.
If a word is not used correctly then it conveys the
wrong idea and teaching.
I want to observe briefly the Greek word “PASCHA",
which is mistranslated "Easter” in Acts 12:4. “The
term Easter is not of Christian origin. It is another
form of Astarte, one of the titles of the Chaldean
goddess. . .the pagan festival of Easter. . .was
introduced into the apsotate Western religion, as a
part of the attempt to adept pagan festivals to Christ-
ianity” (Vines Expository Dictionary of New Testa-
ment Words).
Thus, Easter, actually is not a Bible word. In
every other instance the word “pascha” was trans-
lated "Passover” and should have been in this in-
stance of Acts 12:4. This rendering was, no doubt,
introduced into the King James translation because
of the pressures of Catholicism of that day. Actually
“pascha” means passover, and not Easter.
, Paul wrote, “Whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do
all in the name (by the authority) of the Lord. . .”
(Colossians 3:17). There is not one item of Truth
that gives any authority to celebrate Easter. Where
is the scripture that sets Easter up as a special day
to be observed religiously? There is nonet Where is
the example from the New Testament that the church
observed any such day? There is nonel Where is the
necessary inference that Easter is te^be observed?
There is nonel Consequently, Easter has no Biblical
authority and is an addition to what the Truth teaches,
(cf. Revelation 22:18).
God’s children are to remember the death, burial,
and resurrection of Jesus Our Saviour every day, and
in a special way every Lord’s Day when we commune
around the Lord’s Table partaking of His supper.
(Matthew 26:26-29; Acts 20:7; l Corinthians 11:23-30).
We hav© no authority from Christ to observe
Easter as a special religius day.
“Whosoever goeth onward and abideth not in the
doctrine of Christ, hath not God. . .” (2 John 9).
