THE VERDICT.
Ourrcatfora have almost forget-
teu the Ashtabula dsia8terv So rap-
idly do our American people think,
live, and act that this terrible and
apnaling disaster, whcro nearly two
hundred human souls wero huried
into eternity, they have outlivec
this disaster with all its ti*ain of hor-
rors.
Yet the officers of the law have
been sifting the thing to the bottom,
and contrary to human expectation,
have found tho cause of the disaster,
and not only found tho cause—tho
officers of tho Lake Shore Jt Michi
gan Central railway guilty of but
hold them responsible for this groat
loss of life.
Before the corners jury it was
conclusively proven that the man-
agement of tho road know tho un-
sound and unsafo condition of Ash-
tabula bridge. And still with an
utter and useless disregard for the
safety of human life they continued
to use it.
In this connection it will bo re-
membered that Collins, the Chief
• engineer of tho road took his own
life shortly after tho disaster. Un-
doubtedly he was conscience strick-
en over his gross negligence and
was thus goaded to take Ins own
life.
Now, tho question arises what
will bo done ? Hero we havo a cor-
oner’s jury finding a wholo railroad
company guilty of wholesale mur-
der. Will theS#officers bo prose-
cuted, either singly or as a body un-
der tho law for murder ? Wo haz-
ard the assertion that they will -not.
If we could havo tho wholesomo ex-
ample ofa wholo railroad company
hanged to the same beam or sent up
for life, roilroading would not be
such a jeopardy to human life. But
until we have such an example bu
man beings may be slaughtered by
the hundred in Ashtabula traps and
no questions asked. Until the strict
letter of tho law makes the manage-
ment of a .railroad responsible for
the lives of its passengers thero can
bo no possible security to tho pub-
lic. Wo sincerity hope tho good
laws Of Ohio will make an example
of the management of this Lako
Shore road. If a good job is done-
avo will give them a job on the
nus-management of tho Houston &
Texas Central road.
