Some mjscieant entered the May-
or's office on Tuesday morning,
opened the desk and tore a number
of leaves horn a Bible found therein.
The book was nicely gotten up and
adapted to the administration of
oaths to persons, whether Protestant
or Catholic, having a nice golden
cross on the outside cover. Our
Alayor is naturally very mad about
the wanton destruction of the sacred
book, besides considerably bothered.
He wants to know whether kissing a
mutilated bible or the cross thereon
in administrating an oath is legal or
not.
Julius Toettel was safely landed
in the county jail Alonday evening,
where he will remain until tried by
the district com t. Some thoughtless,
irresponsible parties, had started the
report Alonday afternoon that it whs
intended to lynch the prisoner. Con-
stable Nelms consequently gave out
that the prisoner would not be taken
to Sherman until Tuesday morning,
but about 3 p. m. Monday got a con-
veyance, drove quietly up to the
rear of the jail, placed the prisoner
in the conveyance, and, accompan-
ied by Policeman Wright, drove to
Sherman at a rapid gait. While we
are convinced that the rumor was
entirely groundless, and- satisfied that
any attempt at lynching while the
prisoner w'as in this city would have
met with the most determined oppo-
sition from our citizens, who are
law-abiding and do not wish the fair
name of our city blotted by any law
less proceeding, yet wo think the
course pursued by Constable Nelms ■
very commendable.

i There are plenty of opportunities
for judicious alms giving, and
intelligent relief for the poor in this
city. Many who suffer most keenly
shrink from public appeals, and
prefer to risk health or life even,
rather than sink to the decided level
of mendicancy. It is hard that there
should be cold or hunger in any
home, however humble, and the
charitably disposed can find no more
deserving channel for their gifts
than the Benevolent Association.

girl was toying with the pistol when
it went off, the ball entering the out-

man, and ranging backwards and up-
wards.
