Mow and Important Express Bates
An important a.uangem£nt to the
public has recently been entered into
by the several express companies,
the object being to compete with the
postal order system in the transmis-
sion of money. By the agreement
eutered into, sums of money can be
sent to any point, over any line, with
the exception ot the Texas Express
and the Southern, and at the follow-
ihg uniform rates—'the distance mak-
ing no difference in the charge :
Twenty dollars and under, 15 cts ;
twenty to forty dollar*, inclusive,
20 cts ; forty to fifty dollars, 25 cts;
fifty to seventy dollars, 40 cts ; seven-
ty to one hundred, 50 ct* ; one hund-
red to one hundred and fifty dollars,
75 cts-
The same companies have also
made arrangements to transport
small packages of merchandise, any
distance over their lines, at a reduced
and uniform rate, as follows:
One pound or less, 25 cts; over
one and not more than two pounds,
45 cents. From three to seven
pounds there is an average reduction
of 40 per cent, from old rates when
packages were handled by more than
one company.
The above changes will prove 0:
great advantage to the public, and
will largely increase the business ol
express tympanies.

There will be a strawberry and
ice cream festival this evening in the
Muller block. It will be given
under the auspices of the ladies of
the Catholic church. This will be
the last opportunity to enjoy a feast
of strawberries this season anil it is
hoped that our citizens will take
advantage of the occasion. The
ladies have a number of pleasant
surprises in store lor those attending.
We understand that the most popu-
lar young lady will be voted a gold

Johnny Ilincs, who is well known
in.Denison, was tried betore a jury
in the district court in Sherman yes-
terday, on a charge of assaulting
Charles He wings with intent to kill.
On hearing the evidence for the pros
ecution, the court diiccted the jury
to bring in a verdict of not guilty.
No witnesses were examined for
the defence.
The occiurence above mentioned,
originated out of a difficulty between
Hines and Hewins about two years
ago, in which Hewins shot Hines
in the right arm, inflicting an aggra-
vating wound. It seems that some
time after that occurrence Hewins
met Ilincs at a dance house, and
during the evening some little distur-
bance occurred in which Hines used
words which Hewins conceived to
be a threat to take his life.
We think the verdict correct, hav-
ing a knowledge of the original oc-
currence. And we trust this may
prove a lesson to all young men of
hot blood, that saloons, and espec-
ially at uight time, afford the poorest
opportunities tor settling personal
difficulties. We will say this much,
further, that Mr. Hines was well
known in Denison, and from person-
al knowledge, as well as report, we
do r.ot think him capable of attempt-
ing to take the life of any human in
malice.

Arrival of tne T. & P. trains.
The Texas and Pacific trains now
arrive at the Denison Union Depot,
over the Denison and Southeastern
track every morning, returning at
night. The recent rains have so
damaged their road that the only
way they can get into the Sherman
station is via the Gate City. We have
been telling our neighbors at mud-
.ville fora year or more that it was
only a question of time when this
company would find it necessary to
run their trains to the Railroad Cen-
ter of North Texas, but they would
never see it. The best thing the T.
St T. folks can do is to abandon their
unsafe track between Bellplain and
Sherman, and secure direct connec-
tion at Denison with three trunk
lines of road.

horse he would take him and the

This is a joyous season ; birds are
pouring forth songs of gladness from
overflowing hearts; the trees are
decked with a thick foliage of living
green ; roses and flowers of every
hue are blossoming; vegetation of
every sort is springing up ; planters
and farmers arc glad anil hopeful,
and all hands in the country are busy
as bees at work.
This beautiful season teaches us
cheerfulness, kindness and generosity
as well as liQpe and industry.
Grudges and animosities should be
gone forever; gushing kindness from
full hearts would seem the most
natural thing in the world. Let
revenge, ill will and malice all evap-
orate like morning mists before the

Tho Skiddy Strcot Question.
A per• on of average sense would
suppose, if prostitution is an evil and
to occupy houses of prostitution a
crime against the ordinances of the
city, (and we believe not even a city
official will question this,) that it
would not require five minutes, delib-
eration on the part Of our wise city
dads, to decide how to banish these
“bad” women from Skiddy street.
If the city Marshal can have these
women arrested and fined once a
month, for the purpose of getting
revenue and fees, then certainly they
can be arrested anil fined every day,
if necessary, to rid the city of an in-
tolerable nuisance and growing evil.
The council, however, spent an
hour, Monday night; in talk, and
finally postponed action another
week. The Mayor suggested to the
council the very plan we alluded to,
for getting the women away from
their present quartets, and he should
have been instructed to go ahead and
fight it out on that line if it took all
summer. But we do not anticipate
any serious trouble, if this course
were pursued. If these women knew
that when the order for them to go
was issued, the mayor meant to en-
force his order with vigor, we be-
lieve they would quietly move out,
and find more secluded domicile.
Why the council is so loth to allow
the Mayor to test his own plan is
more than we can comprehend.
Stimulate the Sluggish Kidneys.
In aildi.ion to its tonic and cathartic
properties, Hostetter’s Stomach Bilters
exercises a beneficial influence upon the
kidneys and bladder, when ihev are inact-
ive, bv stimulating them to renewed ex-
ertion thus reopening, as it were, a sluice
for the escape ofimpurilies whose regular
channel of exit is the organs of urination.
Among these are certain abnormal and
inflammatory elements, productive of ir-
reparable injury to the system if not en-
tirely expelled. The kidneys and blad-
der themselves are al o benefit ted by this
stimulus, as their inactivity is usually a
preliminary to their disease and disor-
ganization. They also experience, in
common with oilier portions of the sy>-
tem, the potent invigorative effects of ti e
Bitters, which furthermc-re corrects disor-
dered conditions of the stomach, boweis
and liver.
