TU> 8 DAY........FEBRUARY io, 1880
The Ingalls investigation is likely
to terminate in the conviction of the
Kansas senator of the charges prefer-
red and his retirement fioin the Uni-
ted States Senate.
An entertainment given at the
Houston opera house Saturday night
for the benetit of Irish sufferers, re-
alized $600. This added to the
amount collected for the same pur-
pose try the relief committee makes a
total of neaily $2000.
Know-Nothingism has seized hold
of the republican legislature of
Maine, and it has been ordered that
the judiciary committee inquire into
amending the constitution of the
state, that the right of suffrage shall
be limited.to those who aie able to
read and write the English language-
The Cincinnati Commercial (Re-
publican) says Ohio is a doubtful
State, and that the chances for its
going Republican depends entirely
on the Chicago convention. This is
a warning to the parts at large that
Blaineism or Grantism cannot be
successful n Ohm.
It is announced that the earning-
of the C. B. & road for the elev-
en months betsve. n January I St and
November 30th, 1S79, were $13.-
341,548, against $13,042,878 it
1878—an increase of $298,570. Thi
expenses I r die eleven months wen
$6.6c9,78i, against $6,971,979 in
1S7S—a decrease of $2'-2 r )S.
Before Mr. Voorhees’ negro ex
dus committee, Monday, an Indian
republican admitted that h s pati\
looked upon the movement with
great favor, but regretted that “there
were not more bucks and not so
many women and child en." They
had made the best of it, h<*w.-v< r,
and scattered them around in close
counties.
A sample of the “negro exodus”
business can now be witnessed in
the mining distr et of Hampton an
Rapids Citv. Rock I land coir '
Illinois. Two car loads of negroes
have been shipped in there from
Tennessee to take the place of white
labor. It is feared the end will
prove a “negger hunt.”
The United States supreme court
has just laid down the law as to the
resp nsibilitv of employers for the
lives and limbs of their workmen.
They 11 ust not expose them to perils
which can be guarded against, and
if the servant reports defective or
unsafe machinery, the master be-
comes responsible if the repair or
restoration is not promptly made.
The doctrine, familiar to English
courts but never hitherto adopted
here, that the acts of a superior
officer or workman under a corpora-
tion are as those of the employer,
and the latter is responsible for neg-
ligence involving disastrous results,
w as affirmed. The case was that of
a railroad er gineer who lost his life
while saving ins passengers from ac-
cident, the result of a defect in his
engine to which he had called the
attention ot the master mechanic.
His widow sued the railroad, the
Texas and Pacific, tor $80,000, hut
it was ruled out of court in Texas.
The lady will probably be more suc-
cessful on the re-trial which has been
ordered.
The vote on the repeal of the duty
en salt the other day in the house,
shows how the two parties are di-
vided on the subject of tariff reform.
The bill was defeated through a lack
of a two-thirds vote, the vote stand-
ing 115 to 115. Eleven republicans
voted for the bill and fourteen dem
oerats voted against it, the latter be-
ing mostly from New England. Only
five of the twenty-eight New Eng-
land men voting yoted for repeal.
The vote indicated that the west and
south are the strongholds of revision.
The government astronomers, who
were sent to California fully equip*
jed, fo observe the solar eclipse, te-
jort that they w ere entirely success-
ul, and that an inter-Mercurial plan-
:t was seen The details of this ob-
.ervation will be awaited with inter-
;st. If they saw the long sought
danet Titan, it is to be hoped they
00k pains to verify their work so
horoughly that there can be no cav-
liog over the result, as there was
u tSys.

Prickly Ash Bitters
And Malarifuge.
npHESE BITTERS wiil prevent con-
X trading ofchilL and all malarial dis-
eases if properly used, by invigorating the
liver, toning the stomach, and regulating
the bowels and kidneys. It is a prepara-
tion from such vegetable extracts of
which the Prickly Ash constitutes a lead-
ing part, that enters into the regular pre-
scription practice of all medical men,
among whom Or Sherman is justly
classed as the successfu' compounder af
ter an experimental practice of 30 years,
as a complete antidote to all influences
which, if not arrested in time, terminate
in chills and fever or other malarial dis-
eases.
Though pleasant to the taste, it is not a
beverage, (as the extracts are held in so-
lution in pure Holland gin only) because
of its cathartic properties, and is therefore
an infallible remedy for habitual constipa-
tion.
THE MALARIFUGE is a certain cure
for chills when once contracted. It has
never failed to effect a cure where the di-
redions, which accompany each bottle,
are followed.
Druggists are hereby authorized to re-
fund the money to any party purchasing
who claims a cure is not effected, provid-
ing the di-ections are followed and the
empty bottle returned. For sale by all

Diseases of the pulmo-

safe and reliable remedy
for them is invaluable
to every community.
Ayer’s Chuukv Pkc-

ibysieians as well as invalids to use it with
onfidence. It is the most reliable remedy
or diseases of the throat and lungs that sci-
inee has produced. It strikes at the fotin-
lation of all pulmonary diseases, affording
irompt and certain relief, and is adapted to
latients of any age or either sex. Being
-ery palatable, the youngest children take
t without difficulty. In the treatment of
ordinary Coughs, Colds, Gore Throat,
bronchitis, Influenza, Clergyman’s
lore Throat, Asthma, Croup, and Ca-
arrii, tile effects of Ayeh’s ClIRIlRY Pec-
•oral are magical, and multitudes are an--
rnally preserved from serious illness by its
iinely and faithful use. It should he kept
it hand in every household, for the pro-
eetion it affords in sudden attacks. In
Whooping-cough and Consumption
here is no other remedy so efficacious,
lootliing, and helpful.
The marvellous cures which Ayer’s
jHkhky Pectoral lias effected all over the
Ivorld are a sufficient guaranty that it will
lontinue to produce the best results. An
mpartial trial will convince the most scoptl-
lal of its wonderful curative powers, as well
is of its superiority over all other prepara-
tions for pulmonary complaints.
Eminent physicians in all parts of the
country, knowing its composition, recom-
mend Avek’s Cherry- Pectoral to invalids,
and prescribe it in their practice. The test
of half a century lias proved its absolute
certainty to cure all pulmonary complaints
not already beyond the reach of human aid.
