the matter in ihe hands of

They, the committee, Mr. Faulkner
said, came before the citiiena of El
Faso asking that this assistance be
rendered the railroads on the ground
that the city would be directly bene-
fited thereby. The purchase of this
ground would give back to the city
the nse of Ban Francisco street. The
building of a union depot here would
not increase the bualneas of the rail-
road companies, but would greatly
add to the metropolitan character of
the city.
In regard to closing of parts of
street* and alleys and the opening tip
of one new street, he made It plain
that the city could not possibly lie
the loser. The street* which the city
would be asked to close were not in
use anyhow, but the depot company
would of course want them officially
dosed to avoid any future conten-
tion The opening up of a new street
would enhance the value of property
ta that vicinity and would afford more
convenient access to the depot.
He then discussed the ptexa propo-
sition and said that he thought the
city ought to establish such an insti-
tution reasonably.
He then concluded his remarks
with the proposition that If a union
depot company ts organised the city
will bear the expense of securing the
property desired, by condemnation
proceedings, and the cltiaens pay
whatever is fixed by the courts in
excess of *12.000.
A question from Mr. J. S. Dodge
at this juncture brought out the In
formation that the owners of tola
tend were holding It as high aa *24
0*0. but that toe estimated com to
be fixed by condemnation proceed-
ings would not exceed m.000. and
might possibly be much tews
It was. then moved by Mr. Wood
that the cftlaeaa who might sub-
scribe make good any difference be-
tween *12.000 and the actual coat
after rwadtuntlsa proceedings.
Thi* motion was amended ky Mr.
Stewart to read that the three a*
ttonal hanks are understood to guar-
antee any excess of $12,000 to the
price allowed by the want on con-
" - th* tit#
a com-f’Citfxens shall volunteer to indemnity
the banka to make that guarantee to
the railroad companies, and that It
was the sense of the meeting that
the Chamber of Commerce shall fa-
vor the construction of a union depot
snd will do all in Its power to assist
in obtaining all privileges requested
from the city council.
The original motion waa withdrawn
and the amendment was unanimously
carried.
The chair then appointed the fol-
tewing committee of seven to guaran-
tee the railroad people that this
money would be raised: 8. 4. Freti-
denthai, A. Kraknuer. C. R. More-
head. U. S. Stewart. Richard Captes.
A. Courchcane and H. U Newman.
After the meeting adjourned Mr.
Faulkner said that he was satisfied
that everything would now work out
to the perfection of the cherished
plan to have a union depot here.
