Exchanging plants and books, in
addition to reducing E-waste, is how
Keep Port Aransas Beautiful (KPAB)
will celebrate Texas Recycles Day,
Saturday, Nov. 13. From 9 a.m. to
noon, working with the city of Port
Aransas Parks and Recreation Depart-
ment, a lot of recycling will be done
at Roberts Point Park Pavilion.
In addition to the usual plant ex-
change, a book exchange will be held.
Cell phones and printer cartridges
also will be taken for recycling.
In Port Aransas, KPAB and the
city have joined forces for Texas
Recycles Day (TRD) and will accept
plants, seeds, cuttings, rootings and
books for attendees to take home.
TRD, actually on Nov. 15 each
year, is a statewide public awareness
campaign that aims to educate Tex-
ans on the environmental and eco-
nomic benefits of waste reduction
and recycling. Its success served as
the model for the development of
America Recycles Day.
“Bring something and take some-
thing, or just come and take some-
thing to plant and beautify the island.
For four years KPAB plant swaps have
been successful in Port Aransas by
^‘spreading the wealth’ of living things,
used to bring more green and color
to more places,” said Rachael King,
assistant director of the Parks and
Recreation Department.

lion tons of electronic waste
is buried in landfills each year.

exchange of books. Bring books of
any kind and swap for others. Cell
phones and printer cartridges will
be taken for recycling. Items like cell
phones, computers and other elec-
tronics are the fastest growing por-
tion of the municipal solid waste
stream. Educating Texans on the
advantages of recycling, the reper-
cussions of throwing these items
away, while providing the resources
that are available to them, is a key
focus.
Partners in this program, Keep
Texas Beautiful (KTB) and the
Texas Commission on Environmen-
tal Quality (TCEQ) feel TRD is “a
great opportunity to increase pub-
lic awareness on the growing issue
of e-waste. The potential environ-
mental damages froip landfilling or
incinerating computers and elec-
tronic equipment include the poten-
tial for the release of various toxic
substances into our ground water
and air,” according to a press release
from the Texas Recycles Day Com-
mission.
“We want Texans to start consid-
ering electronics as something they
can recycle, along with the paper,
glass, plastic, and aluminum with
which they are familiar,” said KTB
Executive Director Stacy Cantu.
Practicing the four R’s - reduce,
reuse, recycle, rebuy - decreases the
amount of garbage, conserves natu-
ral resources, saves energy and re-
duces the amount of landfill space
used each year, she added.
“Our main goal is to encourage
waste reduction and recycling. If you
call your event an America Recycles
Day event, a Texas Recycles Day
event, or (your community) Recycles
Day event - we are all taking care of
Texas,” according to the press re-
lease. Having Texas recycle every
day, by teaching Texans to make re-
cycling part of their everyday lives,
is the goal of the commission.
Contact project coordinator Don
Anz at 749-6060 or King at 749-4158
to find out how you can participate.
